The elephant is one of the biggest and heaviest animals. It lives on land and eats about 100-200 kg of food, such as grass. His tusks (slagtanden) are soo heavy, it could weigh about 100 kg. Elephants used to live all around the world, but nowadays they only live in Africa and Asia. There also used to be around 300 different kinds of Elephants. This has been reduced to literally two. One of the main reasons people poach (het illegaal jagen op dieren) elephants is because of its tusks. The tusks contain ivory (ivoor), which is a precious material. Ivory is generally used for things like jewelry, sculptures and piano keys. 25 years ago, 100.000 elephants used to die every year. Luckily this has become significantly less due to a ban on ivor trade. Another big problem elephants currenlty face is a lack of space. Elephants need a lot of space to live in good conditions. This has lead to elephants living closely to humans. This is not an ideal combination. It has resulted in a couple of deaths.
