During high school level VIP specialized instruction, a student demonstrated significant growth in math skills in this one task: setting up and successfully solving a polynomial division problem. After a quick review of standard long division and the reasons why it is used, we went on to discuss how to organize and structure large math problems like this so that they can be read and solved more effectively.

In AP Lang, students are challenged to write a rhetorical analysis essay in 40 minutes. The following lesson, students reflect on their writing with a self-reflection form. Then, students swap papers with a peer and provide feedback via a peer revision workshop. This allows for students to recognize their areas that need improvement for growth in their writing, as well as to recognize one another's strengths.

At the opening day PD, one of the parts of the instructional vision that Chester staff decided to focus on was this first December bullet. Teachers have been awarding a star trophy and certificate to students who do something special. It could be for showing good sportsmanship (for a student for whom this is difficult), writing a complete sentence with correct capitalization and punctuation (for a first grader), persevering through a difficult problem, etc. The student then walks through the school and shares the reason for getting the trophy with anyone who sees them. This has been a fun and motivating way for students to acknowledge and celebrate their own strengths and accomplishments!
