Created in 2010 by language arts teacher Pernille Ripp, this project unites readers all over the globe. The concept is simple: Read one of the selected books (all age levels represented) with your students and participate in any number of technology-driven connections with other classes. How you connect is really up to you. Many teachers make connections on the GRA Facebook page or the Edmodo group. Some teachers Skype, some use Twitter, Google Hangouts, Seesaw, blogs, email, and even old fashioned snail mail (postcard exchanges).

Want to learn more?
https://theglobalreadaloud.com/

This is Padlet. I like to think of Padlet as the online equivalent of a note pad. Ridiculously easy to use and versatile, Padlet is great for collaborative projects for students across the table or across political boundaries. Classes can create a Padlet with a question and post on social media such as Twitter for replies. My class used it in conjunction with the Global Read Aloud and we were able to chat with students in other countries. Here's what our conversation looked like: https://padlet.com/lbunting/mplev1i3afud

Padlet:
https://padlet.com
or
How can you use Padlet in your classroom?
https://goo.gl/4FKKeo

Write About is a safe collaborative student writing platform that gives students the chance to interact with others and publish their own writing online. Students can look for existing interest groups to join such as book chats, or teachers can create their own groups to fit curriculum. Students can respond to prompts or can create an original piece of writing. Can be used by all grade levels, and privacy and sharing permissions can be customized by the teacher. Write About gives students the audience they crave while protecting them online. Write about is a paid subscription, but last year teachers participating in the GRA received a free membership!

https://www.writeabout.com/

Are you a fan of March Madness? Then you will LOVE March Book Madness. Created by two fifth grade teachers, March Book Madness captures the excitement of a playoff tournament with reading. Sixteen books are selected prior to the event and posted online in a one-on-one book "tournament". Separate brackets for picture books, middle grades reads, and young adult novels make it easy to find the right books for your students. Students or classes vote weekly using a Google form from the MBM website. Voting
continues throughout the month of March until only one book is left standing!

On the March Book Madness website teachers can view book trailers and connect with others using the map of participating classes. Downloadable book brackets are also available so students can make their own predictions. March Book Madness exposes students to a number of fabulous titles and encourages evaluation/debate.

http://marchbookmadness.weebly.com/about.html

Sponsored by Scholastic in conjunction with Lit World, World Read Aloud Day (February 8, 2018) puts literacy on a global stage with millions of people from across the globe celebrating the benefits of a good story. Teachers can connect on social media, students can watch live streams from authors and other guest readers, and the event lends itself to literacy-related service projects.

Last year my sixth grade students created lessons to go with favorite books. They pushed into primary classrooms and became guest readers/teachers. While not a "global" connection, it did push my students out of their comfort zones, and was a learning experience for everyone involved.

BookSnaps were created by Tara Martin as a response to her teenage son's love of Snapchat. BookSnaps is essentially a 21st Century way to annotate text. We know kids love technology, so why not teach them this skill with a twist? Using the Snapchat app, or Instagram, or Seesaw, or Google Drawing, or potentially any number of other platforms, students snap an image of text and use drawing and text tools, emojis, and bitmojis, and even audio to express their thoughts about the selected text. BookSnaps are shared using a hashtag on social media sites, so students have an audience for their work and can see a multitude of others.

#BookSnaps speak for themselves.
http://www.tarammartin.com/booksnaps-snapping-for-learning/
