These fortune tellers have always been a hit, after making their own, students pair up and answer the questions to get to know each other better. Also, there's a game similar to Battleship where students alternate asking each other questions while they call out coordinates for hidden ships. Four Corners may also be a possibility if students are wearing masks and don't get too close together.

We made teams of 3-4 students, I "randomly" assigned them, but I had 1/3 of my class new to the building so I tried to mix up the groups so everyone met someone new. Then I gave each group a big stack of index cards and told them to build the tallest tower they could. I didn't put a time limit, I didn't model it, I didn't give directions, hints or tips. I just walked around and talked to kids about towers, hobbies, summer, etc and got to know them while they had a very team oriented task to complete. The kids loved it!!  1. Arrange group members in a circle. 
2. Have group members turn around so that their back is facing the middle of the circle. 
3. Tell group members to count to the number 23 with only one person saying a number at a time. 
4. There can be no planning and everyone must speak once before someone can say another number. 
5. If two people say the same number at the same time or a number is said twice, the group must start over. 
6. Ask participants, “What was the purpose of this?” Answers: Team building, problem solving skills, listening

One person draws something. Students have to really work together, listen to one another, and think outside of the box to be successful. It is also a great way for me to assess who may work well together and who may not. I usually try to do one at the beginning of the year and several throughout the year on holidays or early release days. The students love them!

It is a great lab and over the last few years I have developed a a collaborative piece to get them to establish relationships they can build on for lab partners. (not sure how I can get this accomplished this year -- I am thinking schoology discussions once they have done their individual piece of the lab with COVID safety protocols in place.
