In this scene Holden is waiting for Sally so they can go on their date together. When she shows up he admires her and how terrific she looked. Holden was constantly saying how in love he was with her and that he would marry her in a second, even though he doesn't even like her that much. "I felt like marrying her the minute I saw her. I'm crazy. I didn't even like her much" (Salinger 138).

After the play Holden and Sally go ice skating they rented skates and quickly realized they weren't very good at it. Holden realized that they came more for the idea of skating than the actual skating itself. They skate for a little but then end up sitting and talking.

Holden tells Sally he wants to run away together.

This is significant because it shows how Holden wants to run away with Sally. He wants to take her to Massachusetts and Vermont and the live in a cabin with her. He wants to marry her and build a life together with her. Which is significant because he states that he doesn't even really like her that much, but wants to run away together, leading up to them having a fight over it. Holden eventually told her "You give me a royal pain in the ass" (Salinger 148).

Holden Calls Carl Luce

Holden starts off with calling Jane but when she doesn't pick up he ends up calling Carl Luce. Carl went to Whooton school with Holden, and they decided to meet up for drinks at 10 o'clock at the Wicker Bar, on 54th. This is significant because throughout the rest of the book we have read so far Holden has always been alone, wanted to be alone but now he is eager to find someone to go dancing, get food with, or get a drink with in this instance. This symbolizes that he himself might be changing and recongnizing things about himself. "So what I did finally, I gave old Carl Luce a buzz" (Salinger 151).

In this moment when Holden is waiting for Carl Luce, he is remembering certain things from his past. The one that stuck out was about both of his brothers. About his brother D.B being in the army and about Allie. He is reminiscing these moments because they symbolize Allies memory bringing him comfort and making him feel happy and not lonely inside. Learning the truth of the writing on Allie's baseball mitt and the siginifcance it entails. "He made Allie go get his baseball mitt and then he asked him who was the best war poet..." (Salinger 156).

These few chapters highlight Holden and his internal conflicts. Holden has always struggled with loneliness and just his identity. He doesn't know who he is always lying about his age and who he is. He feels lonely and he tries to step out of his comfort zone which is highlighted in these chapters. Holden is constantly struggling with internal conflicts and this matters as we go through the rest of the book constantly being exposed to more problems and situations that comes his way.
