Students will create a film called "How We Can Make This a Better World," with their reactions, thoughts and feelings on racism. This film can include interviews with family or community members who may have experienced racism.

Integration was a divisive topic in much of the United States, and many Southern governors tried to stop integration. There were violent protests, and worse, during this period in American History, but what I want you to pay attention to as you watch this video is how much these students had to deal with at a very young age. As a women's historian I find conversations about equality and race to largely wash out the question of gender. Did equality for all African Americans in our country include women? Largely the answer is no, not yet. But here is a great website that features articles, pictures, and biographies about powerful black female women equally. These women were equally involved in the Civil Rights movement as the famous men that we know.
