Sometimes, there wasn't enough food because of the tough weather. So, the Inca learned how to keep some crops for a long time. For example, they would dry out potatoes over many days. The dried potatoes could last up to 10 years.

The Inca believed that their rulers were sons of the sun god Inti. When the rulers died, they mummified them by taking out their organs and preserving their bodies with alcohol. Then, they froze them in the cold mountain air. Just like Egyptian pharaohs, these rulers were buried with their treasures. Regular people also sometimes mummified their loved ones by putting them in cold caves. They would bring out the mummies during special events like weddings or harvest festivals, or important meetings in the community.
