They make camp and Conner wants to talk to them he says if they do not want to come they can leave Latemer say's he would like to leave Sage see's something and yells for Latemer to look out but he is struck by the arrow and killed. They all go to sleep and wake up at Conner's place which is a huge mansion they are told to bathe and he finds out he has his own servant. when they go to dinner Conner tells them the queen the king and the prince are dead and the country doesn't know it he tells them that if the information was found out a civil war could break out and other countries might attack he tell's them that he is training them to be fake princes and to pretend that their the long lost prince and they will be taking lessons like sword fighting. when he rides on the horse he challenges one of the vigils that he can ride a horse just as well as he can and gets a wild horse that carries him away. he is found and is in trouble with Conner.

On board with her are son of Hepaestus Leo, who built the ship, daughter of Aphrodite Piper, who will be using her mother’s gift of “charmspeak” to disarm the Romans, and Piper’s boyfriend Jason, a son of Jupiter and former praetor of the Roman camp. Also accompanying the group is its satyr chaperone, Coach Gleeson Hedge, who is overenthusiastic and prone to aggression. Feeling a shiver, Annabeth thinks she hears someone laughing, but no one is there (page 10). As the Roman camp comes into view, Annabeth sees evidence of a recent battle against monsters. Armed demigods emerge from the gates. Annabeth hopes to see her boyfriend Percy among them but instead hears an explosion. A statue, Terminus, the god of boundaries who protects New Rome, has appeared on the ship to order them not to bring weapons into the city. Piper tries to charmspeak him, but he is immune. When Annabeth interrupts to mediate, Terminus condescendingly refers to Athena as “Minerva’s Greek form” (page 13). They land and greet the Romans, but then Leo suddenly starts shooting bombs at the Roman camp and he believes a feeling took over him. Leo cannot remember exactly what happened. He recalls watching himself but not being able to control his actions. He recalls feeling cold. Arion and Hazel are following the ship, and Jason is injured and resting. The ship is damaged, but its mechanized head, Festus, formerly a whole bronze dragon, is functioning. With Festus’s help, Leo assesses what materials he needs for repairs and informs the group that they will find them “at the Great Salt in Utah” (page 47). The ship lands on the lake, and Arion lands on the ship. Hazel studies Leo, making him nervous. He shows her around the ship. In addition to eight cabins for the demigods and Coach Hedge, the ship has a mess hall/lounge, stables, a sickbay, storage, and an engine room. Jason and Piper are in the sickbay, and the rest of the demigods are in the dining area. Frank asks about the prophecy Ella uttered from having accessed the Sibylline Books, a collection of prophecies related to the fall of Rome. That prophecy sounded really important.

When he gets back he takes a shower because that's the only place he can get away from the animals. While he is taking a shower somebody rips the shower curtain off and it is a gorilla with a shark attached to his butt. Rex decides to go to the zoo to find out who murdered Tater Tot so she will go away.

Conner gets super angry at him and sends him to the dungeon and Sage is whipped and hung by his hands. He is left in the dungeon for two nights and Imogene goes down there when she is not supposed to and reveals she is not mute. Sage sneaks outside and climbs around the house and gets locked out of the room he goes to Conner's room and finds a secret passage throughout the house he goes back into his room that way. He and the other two kids have to practice being servants because the soon to be queen is coming. Sage waits until everyone is asleep and goes into the secret passage. He is planning to spy on Conner but then he is attacked by Tobias and finds out Tobias steals a knife from the kitchen and starts digging it into Sages back. Sage says he will cooperate and Tobias lets go but Sage takes his knife out and pushes Tobias against the wall and knocks him out.

Mallory yelled at him and he fell to the ground Mallory went down grabbed him and he pulled so hard that she fell to the ground herself he one started yelling at her and they both ran off in the distance.

It shows her Octavian is addressing the Roman demigods in the forum at Camp Jupiter, urging them to war. Piper feels guilty for not having wanted to befriend the Romans, scared of “losing Jason to his old life” (page 79). The blade shows a series of other images whose meaning Piper does not understand, including one of herself, Jason, and Percy standing in what resembles a well, up to their waists in black water. Jason and Percy both get pulled under. Piper asks the blade to show her “something helpful” (page 79). She sees a man on the side of an empty highway in Kansas, offering her a silver goblet containing some sort of cure. At that moment, Jason wakes up. Hazel and Leo arrive, holding a bronze sheet. Leo rushes to the engine room to get to work. Annabeth, Percy, and Frank arrive. When the ship begins listing, Hazel notes that the lake’s nymphs may be angry at them. Percy heads out to “hold off the water spirits” and sends Frank and Annabeth to help Leo (page 81). Leo gets Argo II in the air and off to Atlanta. They park in the sky a few hundred feet above Kansas and settle in for the night. Percy has a nightmare of choking in mud then being in an underground parking garage where he overhears the giant twins Ephialtes and Otis planning the death of the demigods and the destruction of Rome. They mention a bronze jar and a “talented friend” who is protecting a statue (page 117). In the bronze jar, Nico is trapped. He appears to be meditating and has pomegranate seeds lying at his feet. Percy wakes up to find Annabeth standing over him in the middle of the night. They go for a walk around the ship, stopping at the stables. Percy tells her about the opportunities in New Rome, how demigods can live normal lives, go to college, marry, and raise families. Annabeth worries that the Roman and Greek demigods will never be able to reconcile. Percy shares his dream with her, and she recalls Nemesis’s five-day deadline, the Kalends of July. Annabeth admits that the last time she saw her mother, Athena accused her of failing her. They fall asleep in each other’s arms. When Percy wakes up, Frank is standing over him and Annabeth. Everyone feared they had been kidnapped. Frank leads them back to the mess hall where they get scolded and chewed out as "rule breakers". Percy talks about his dream and how they plan to save Nico Di Angelo. While they were talking, they figured out a couple lines of prophecy that Ella the Harpy had randomly recited.

While the guard is walking a big bang happens on the other side of the park sending the guard running, but nobody knows it was Drumstick knocking over a garbage can. When Drumstick gets back he tells them and they got to the panda enclosure to save Kou Kou from the animal murder. When they get there they realize the panda enclosure is 25 feet below them so they slide down a banner into the enclosure making Kou Kou mad. The Mei Mei tells them they should give him a special food that will calm him down so they do and Kou Kou rolls it Mei Mei. After that the cage starts to open and Kou Kou stays. Rex and Darvish hide in the bamboo plants but the flash light goes right where Rex is standing and he sees that the person is Talon Smithfield.

Annabeth is trying to cheer up Hazel when Frank rushes in, anxious to leave because the Romans are following them. Leo gets the ship up and, following Percy’s order, sets their course for Charleston, to find a map leading to the Mark of Athena or something “that might heal the rift between the Romans and Greeks” (page 153). Annabeth begins to put the pieces together but says they need to find the map to know more. They consider potential Charleston landmarks: the museum where the C.S.S. Hunley is kept and the Battery, a park near the harbor, apparently haunted by a Civil War-era southern belle who only talks to women. Back in her room, Annabeth studies Parthenon models stashed on her laptop, inherited from legendary inventor Daedalus, and recalls her last meeting with her mother when they ran into each other at Grand Central Station. Athena did not recognize Annabeth and seemed lost and confused, lamenting the sack of her patron city, theft of her identity, and removal from her “beloved homeland” (page 160). When Annabeth identified herself as Athena’s daughter, the goddess pressed a coin into her hand and demanded that she avenge her mother against the Romans, who have disgraced her.

Velgerath has dinner with Conner and then they have a meeting together and Velgerath talks about what Conner said about Jaron and how Conner thinks he is alive. Sage has to go back to their bedroom because Tobias left papers in the mattress and if they're found then the soldiers will know they're there. Imogene attacks a soldier and Sage kills him to protect her and Mott has to stab himself in the arm to fake that the soldier attacked him. Conner picks Roden to be his prince but then switches to Sage because he can do Jaron's famous trick of flipping a coin between his fingers. Sage saves Roden and Tobias by telling Conner he won't be his prince unless he kills him.

Jason and Percy are both exhausted from their efforts during the battle. Frank helps Piper and Annabeth bring them to their cabins, leaving Hazel and Leo alone with Coach. Hazel tells Leo that he reminds her of Sammy, someone she knew from her previous life, and offers to show him a memory that she experiences as a flashback, hoping this will help them figure out how they are connected. Leo takes her hand, “and the world dissolve[s]” (page 193).

Percy leads Piper and Jason deeper underground. They arrive in a large room filled with machines powered by hellhounds running on hamster-style wheels. From the twenty-foot ceilings, live animals are suspended in cages. Weapons and armor travel along conveyor belts. In his bronze jar, Nico is curled up, sleeping or dead. The demigods are in a hypogeum, the room under a coliseum that holds “set pieces and machinery used to create special effects” (page 375). Ephialtes and Otis emerge, and Ephialtes explains that they have planned “the greatest spectacle Rome has ever seen—and the last!” (page 375). To stall for time, Percy gets Ephialtes talking and learns that Annabeth is on the brink of death, and Hazel, Frank, and Leo are trapped. The giants plan to use Percy, Piper, and Jason for their show. Their destruction of Rome will take one month, until Gaea awakes on August first, “the best date to destroy all humanity” (page 377). Ephialtes shares the horrors he has planned, unmoved by Percy’s suggestions and Piper’s charmspeak. The three demigods decide to charge the giants. Piper dodges and swerves while running to Nico's aid. It looks like he is unconscious and barely moving. Percy and Jason create an unforgettable storm to wear down the Giants. They are confronted by Bacchus and moved into a real stadium with 1000s of cheering Lares. Percy and Jason knock the giants out and Bacchus taps them on the head and immediately disintegrates them. Percy, Jason, Piper, and Nico hop on the Argo II and descend into the air. They drop Percy and Annabeth off for Annabeth to start her journey on the Mark of Athena. Annabeth descends into a staircase that leads to chambers that she believes are the Labyrinth here in Rome. Annabeth explores and sees a giant spider that is Arachne. She knows she will have to get past her to find the Athena Parthenos. Knowing that “trickery and brains” are her only hope against Arachne, Annabeth thinks of the weaver’s fatal flaw, pride, and gets her talking about her tapestries (page 400). Annabeth mentions that she is redesigning Mount Olympus and says the tapestries belong on display there, where the gods can admire them. Arachne complains that Athena destroyed her best work since they “depicted the gods in rather unflattering ways” (page 402). Annabeth notes that the gods would enjoy tapestries that depict their divine antagonists in an unflattering light, goading Arachne with promises of revenge on Athena even sweeter than killing her favorite child. Annabeth would be her agent and see Arachne’s tapestries adorning the gods’ palaces. If she dies, and Gaea destroys the gods, however, they will never realize that Arachne was the better weaver. When Annabeth shifts her weight, another crack opens in the floor. Arachne warns her about the fragility of the room, eaten away by the hatred boiling in Tartarus beneath them. Only Arachne’s webbing keeps the room together. Consumed with a desire to have her work displayed on Olympus, Arachne refuses to kill Annabeth, who says Arachne will have to create an audition piece, an abstract structure. She shows Arachne the design for an enormous version of Chinese handcuffs, but Arachne will have to use the webbing that currently wraps the Athena Parthenos. Annabeth notices that there is a flaw and wants Arachne to come inside the hidden trap and see it. Arachne heads into the trap and descends into Tartarus when the roof explodes and the Argo II descends over them. Everybody aboard ship gets the Athena Parthenos while Percy comforts her. Something grabs Annabeths leg and she quickly realizes it was a web. Percy grabs her and his barely hanging on. If they fell, they would go to Tartarus. Percy quickly told Nico that had been close by to close the Doors of Death in the mortal world while Percy and Annabeth do it from the underworld. Both doors need to be closed in less time than they think. Percy and Annabeth descend to Tartarus.

The lady warns them about the graveyard, which makes them scared. When they get to the graveyard, none of them turn on their phone lights, they don't want to attract attention. Allison quickly pulls up a map of the graveyard on her phone, and they go to the grave where "The Lady in White" was buried. They start snapping a bunch of pictures. They take a lot of pictures because on the internet there is a picture of "The Lady in White" sitting on a grave. They don't know if it is real or not, but they want to try. They hear twigs snap from behind them, and they all become silent. They see a raccoon jump out of the bushes, and they all scream. Then, they hear someone running towards them, and screaming at them. They quickly run out of the graveyard. Jackson tells them about a hole that he saw when they walked into the graveyard. They quickly run where Jackson tells them to, and they go through the hole in the fence. They start running towards a forest, and they see a police car. Josie knows that it wasn't there when they entered the graveyard. They run into the forest, and hide behind bushes. They hear the policeman get closer, and they hold their breaths. Eventually, the cop goes away, and they stop hiding. They all get a notification on their phone at the same time. It is a picture of a white house with blood-red colored words that are dripping. The text reads, "I'm watching." They all freak out, and say possibilities. But, they all know that they are all wrong. Allison calls an Uber, and they see that it is the same driver from before. She doesn't say a word to them this time. When they go to Josie's house they slip off their boots, and shower. They are all full of mud. Then, they all go to bed. In the middle of the night, they hear Josie's house alarm go off. They think that someone is in the house, and they wonder where Jackson is. Josie, and Allison rush downstairs, and see Jackson putting in a code on her alarm system. Jackson tells her that the alarm was going off for a window opening. Josie goes over to where the window would be, and sees nothing. But, on her way back up the stairs, she sees a little pile of dirt. She inspects one of the piles, and realizes it is shaped like a foot. She thinks that it was from Jacksons boots, so she comes over to where he put them. They still have a ton of mud on the bottom of them, and it doesn't look like he was walking around in them. When Jackson gets up, Josie asks him if he did it. The Argo II flies over mountains in Italy on a course from Rome to the House of Hades in Greece, where they hope to find Percy and Annabeth.Hazel, Nico, and Leo guard the ship against boulders thrown by the numina, mountain gods and sons of Gaea who are trying to stop their quest, while Jason, Piper, Frank, and Coach Hedge rest. The ship sustains damage, so Leo retreats out of the mountains. Leo wants to wake the others to discuss a plan to cross Italy, but Hazel knows they must figure it out without them because the group has been arguing since losing their leaders, Percy and Annabeth. Hazel asks for help from her father Pluto, and her magical horse Arion appears. Hazel is amazed Arion came to help her because the Mediterranean is dangerous for demigods and their allies. She summons Arion a gold nugget to eat because she can extract precious metal from the earth. Leo is concerned because Arion wants to take Hazel to a Roman temple in a tornado. Hazel knows she must go because this is her chance to lead and save her friends, so she lets Arion take her. Arion leads her to the swirling tornado where they find the goddess Hecate. Hazel chats with the goddess and learns that going north is their best choice. (that choice is still horrific) Hazel tells the others and they set off north on a 300 mile detour just so Gaea won't expect them. Piper and Coach Hedge take night watch while everybody else sleeps except for Leo. Leo tries to figure out the secrets of the Athena Parthenos because Annabeth said it’s the key to defeating Gaea and stopping the war between the Romans and Greeks. Leo finds nothing and feels guilty because he secured the statue before making sure Annabeth and Percy were on board. He goes to sleep next to Athena’s statue and dreams he’s in his mother’s old workshop. Gaea taunts that death is near. A shadowy giant chases Leo through a doorway to a decimated Camp Half-Blood. Gaea’s voice tells Leo the Romans can’t be stopped marching on Camp Half-Blood. Leo runs up the hill to find the world gone. A sorceress gives Leo a choice, jump off the cliff or into a cave beneath her. She tells Leo that he will be the first to die in the House of Hades unless he chooses to escape now. Jason wakes Leo and tells him Nico has information before they get to Bologna. The mess hall walls are enchanted to show scenes of Camp Half-Blood, which makes Leo feel homesick. Jason, Hazel, Frank, and Nico round out the group. Piper and Coach Hedge guard the deck. Nico communed with the dead about the House of Hades. Leo mentions his dream about a shadowy giant chasing him and how he had to make a choice. The other demigods were not surprised that he had a nightmare but as usual, they know this ties together with the fate of the world.

He grabs his quiver and bow, which Leo figured out was camouflaged as a backpack. Leo constantly teases Frank and makes him feel less worthy than the others, so Mars and Ares tell Frank to kill him. Frank joins everyone on deck and sees dozens of monsters that look like cows amidst the tourists in Venice. Frank, Nico, and Hazel volunteer to go find a god despite the monsters. They find a god in a pitch black house and Frank asks for help. In response, Nico gets turned into a plant and Hazel is tinted green with sickness. Frank goes off and fights all of the monsters in Venice. After that, his dad, Mars came to visit and he gave Frank a blessing from the gods. Frank returns to the house and tells the god this; "Please shut your yapper." (page 101) Hazel Nico gets freed and the three of them take off.

A Burning Man has appeared, apparently to speak to Nico. Nico heads over to the burning man. He ends up in a temple of lost souls with his father, Hades. They chat for a little bit and Nico learns a few things. Nico heads back to the others to report. Meanwhile, at the port of Pylos, Piper and Frank search for the poison they need to make the physician’s cure. Piper is happy for the distraction from thinking about the conversation she and her mother shared the previous evening, in which Aphrodite offered a bleak vision of the future and made Piper promise not to share it. Frank secures the poison from his shape-shifting distant relatives, though the demigods still don’t know how to brew the physician’s cure. Back on the Argo II, the demigods discuss their plans. Frank’s relatives told him that “the chained god” they need to find refers to a statue of Ares that the Spartans keep “chained up in their city so the spirit of war would never leave them” (page 137). When Jason wonders how this will help them, Piper privately recalls Aphrodite’s warning that the threat to Jason isn’t only his sword wound but also “the ugly truth he saw in Ithaca” (page 138). Prompted by Hazel, Piper shares one of the visions she saw in Katoptris: herself and Annabeth in a cave with a statue of a warrior engulfed in flames.
