This year’s theme is ‘Change and Adapt’, encouraging children to explore how the world is evolving and how we can adapt—whether through science, technology, robotics, engineering, mathematical or environmental action.

On Friday 21st March 2025, children are encouraged to dress as scientists with an emphasis on ‘What would YOU look like as a scientist?’.

Alternatively, children may wish to dress in green or white linking to scientific enquiry and developmental sustainability.

What to Expect:

* Hands-on activities exploring change and adaptation

* Fun experiments and engineering challenges

* Learning about sustainability, waste reduction, up-cycling and energy-saving solutions

* Discovering how science helps us adapt to a changing world that we live in

*inspirational real-life stories of careers in STREAM

This is a fantastic opportunity for our children to build upon their science capital by exploring becoming young scientists themselves, further develop their problem-solving skills, and make links on how science impacts our everyday lives.

As part of RAK Academy Science Week, we will be celebrating Recycling Day on Tuesday. We have planned a range of engaging activities to inspire our children to think about sustainability and caring for our planet.

What to Expect on the Day:

Upcycled Uniforms: We encourage children to get creative by upstyling their uniform with a recycled item or accessory. This is a great opportunity to showcase their imagination while promoting eco-friendly practices.

Exciting Assemblies: Our dedicated Green Committee will be hosting fun and interactive assemblies throughout the day to raise awareness about recycling and sustainability.

International Poster Competition: As part of our ongoing partnership with Harris Garrard School in London, students are invited to create a poster about recycling. Posters can be made using any media but should be no larger than A3 size. There will be a winner in each category (KS1, LKS2, and UKS2), and the deadline for entries is 31st March.

We are looking forward to a fantastic day full of creativity, learning, and positive environmental impact.

Today, our students showcased incredible creativity by coming in with upcycled accessories for their uniforms—proving that sustainability can be stylish! 👕♻️💡

During this experiment, the children explored different filtration and sieving methods to understand how microplastics can be removed from water. They tested various materials, such as fabrics, paper, sieves, and funnels, to determine which was most effective at filtering out sand particles—representing microplastics.

Through their observations and results, the children learned:
 ✅ Not all filters are equally effective – Some materials allowed more particles to pass through, while others trapped more sand, highlighting the challenges of filtering microplastics from water.
 ✅ Microplastics are difficult to remove – Even with different filters, some small particles still remained, showing why microplastics are a persistent problem in our environment.
 ✅ Real-world impact – The experiment helped them understand how scientists and engineers work to create better filtration systems to reduce plastic pollution in our oceans.

By the end of the lesson, the children also gained a deeper understanding of the harmful effects of microplastics on marine life. They discussed how sea creatures often mistake plastic for food, leading to starvation, choking, and the spread of toxic chemicals through the food chain—eventually reaching humans.

Finally, they brainstormed ways to prevent microplastics from entering our water systems, such as reducing plastic use, recycling properly, and choosing eco-friendly alternatives.

This hands-on activity reinforced the importance of responsible plastic use and inspired students to think critically about solutions for protecting our oceans!

We discussed how different animals have unique features that help them survive in their habitats. The children then took part in a fun sorting activity, matching animals to their correct adaptations. They really enjoyed learning about how animals have evolved to thrive in their environments!
