There are many different ways that humans have impacted the environment in Africa, including desertification, oil spills, and dams.
First off, humans have caused desertification through over farming and grazing that makes the soil prone to erosion, and as people cut down trees for light and heat, it exposes the soil to get blown away. This desertification causes forests to virtually disappear, it is affecting more rainforests, and the amount of arid/unusable land is growing. This creates a challenge because much of the land is used for agriculture, but when farmers over-farm or over-graze and area it can become unsuitable for continued use. One way to prevent this is to prevent an area from being over-planted and use the proper precautions to prevent this. This can also create a challenge because the oil is harmful to the environment, one way to help fix this is set up safety regulations to prevent it from happening or to have faster response and cleanup times.
Another way humans impact the environment is through oil spills. Due to the wealth to be made from selling oil, many companies are drilling for it without any attention to the environment. Often oil spills occur devastating plant and animal life in the area, and most of the time these occur, the cleanup operations have been slow or non-existent.
Lastly, humans interact with the environment through the construction and usage of dams. Dams can stop, restrict or redirect the flow of rivers. An example of a dam in use is the Aswan High Dam in Egypt. Because of the constant flooding of the Nile River Valley people in the area have wanted to be able to control the flow of the river. The people decided to build the dam and now 50% more land is available for agriculture, and farmers in the area can have 3 rather than 1 planting seasons a year. This can also have negatives like the sediment that was good for the soil for farmers now is not as available.
