With a free write this week I wanted to blog about the figurative language Nicholas sparks uses. This includes symbols, metaphors, and imagery. For example, Noah metaphorically explains his life as a blue-chip stock, fairly stable, more ups than downs. He shows his life with both romance and tragedy, he does believe that he is and always has been going in the right direction. In this story, a guitar symbolizes his father, and Noah continuously reaches for the guitar. There is a heart with “Noah loves Allie” in it that symbolizes their young love. The oak tree where this stands simply symbolizes them with being young and having some of their earliest feelings. Noah has a painting hung above his fire place and shows it to Allie and it is the one she had painted the summer they were together and he also showed that it makes him feel alive. “Dusk, Noah realizes, its just an illusion, because the sun is either above the horizon or below it. And that means that day and night are in a way that few things are; there cannot be one without the other, yet they cannot exist at the same time. How would it feel, he remembers wondering, to be always together, yet forever apart.” This is a metaphor and shows the agonizing impact of what having Alzheimer’s will do to you. All of these examples show that Nicholas sparks uses amazing figurative language and a lot of it.
