I use AI to help students develop audience empathy when creating marketing content. In our practical module on photography, video, web and copywriting, students often struggle to imagine the day-to-day needs of business or professional audiences. We start persona development by giving an AI tool a brief outline of the product or service and asking it to suggest likely audience roles. We then prompt it to describe those roles’ daily challenges and motivations—things like avoiding mistakes or impressing a manager—which students might not consider on their own. This approach has transformed their understanding, bringing far greater depth and richness to their work and to the module as a whole.

I then checked over the information, deleted a few slides, and swapped a few of the images, one of which I'd made with Bing Image creator. Part 2: Once the PowerPoint slides were ready, I went to MS Forms. I asked Copilot in MS Forms to look at my PowerPoint and come up with questions for a knowledge check. Tip: If you want 10 questions, ask for more and delete the ones you don't need. I went through and checked all the questions and answers for accuracy and ambiguity, then Part 3 I went back into the PowerPoint and embedded the quiz so we could do it live on screen. Unfortunately, embedding it didn't work, but we did it via the QR code and it all went well.

Generative AI has transformed how my students bring their marketing campaigns to life.

The gap in design ability was always clear during workshops. Those confident with design software excelled in visualising their ideas, while others… not so much. This was frustrating because students with great ideas were sometimes limited by their lack of design software expertise.

Bridging the gap

Encouraging ethical use of generative AI within my classroom activities has been transformative. It is not only enabling students an equal opportunity to create professional-quality marketing assets, it is enhancing their confidence, creativity and enthusiasm.

In Practice

In one of my modules, students take part in a hands-on ‘asset creation’ activity. Within it, we discuss the role of AI as a ‘collaborative tool’ and explore AI-powered software that could be used to visualise their marketing campaign ideas.

Open discussions and tutorials of multiple AI tools (CoPilot, ChatGPT and DeepAI) within this workshop takes place and is noticeably building students’ creative confidence. It is also creating a more inclusive environment for students regardless of their design software expertise (and laptop quality!).

Use of AI is optional within the activity to accommodate those preferring not to use AI (although I have never experienced an instance of this happening).

The Results

Creativity and imagination have flourished. Students appear a lot less afraid to explore bold concepts. The overall quality of their campaign ideas and visualisations has noticeably improved. AI hasn’t replaced creativity within marketing education - it’s amplified it.

I have attached an extract from the asset creation activity to this post.

Students are working on a live client project for a tech firm and part of their assessment is to develop a go-to-market strategy. In the app students are challenged to choose customer segments and to decide on their pricing strategy and sales channels mix. They get live feedback on their decisions and the gamefieid nature of the app means they get very excited to out compete other teams in the class. After testing the app with one class I was immediately able to tweak some aspects of the model and use the updated version with another class just an hour later.

I have used the AI autogenerate multiple choice test questions function in NILE. This was to create an up to date bank of 100 questions for a summative assessment. It allowed me to get a first draft of questions, in varied formats (True/false, Multiple choice, Matching, fill in the blank) and then select which ones I wanted to use. It used the content which had been published week by week on NILE to derive the questions. I particularly appreciated the way it generated the 'incorrect' options which were really intuitive.

Adaptation of class materials

A mature student with an AIR assessment for ADHD and Dyslexia was struggling to process all the information from recorded lectures, powerpoint slides and reading lists. Also struggled to distinguish between 'essential' and 'extra' information resulting in cognitive overload (trying to read and understand ALL the material), and on the point of quitting.

I introduced them to agents/projects in CoPilot and explained the concept of making folders to interrogate materials and change format. They couldn't access CoPilot for some reason but went on to find Notebook LM "OMG it's incredible" - particularly for converting pdfs into video and audio content which this student finds more accessible. They particularly liked the way they were able to control which materials it was interrogating.

Translation

Working with students on a client project I found a highly relevant journal article - but only in Turkish. We used Ai to translate and summarise the paper, then interrogated it for relevance to our topic, then adjust form context (Turkey-to-UK, 2019-2026), then apply to our project task.

We then added another source (grey literature) and used Ai to compare and contrast the two sources in relation to our task.

Using AI to Create a Large-Scale Social Media Simulation for the Nexus Festival

To support the Nexus Festival simulation at Silverstone, AI tools were used to create a large volume of realistic communication assets that simulated a live event environment. The aim was to replicate the pace and complexity of digital communication during a major event so that students could respond to a dynamic and evolving media landscape.

AI enabled the rapid creation of a complete fictional festival ecosystem, including branding, visual assets, promotional imagery, a logo and visual identity, and supporting materials such as the running order and event instructions.

The social media activity was designed to reflect a storyboarded sequence of unfolding events during the festival, including incidents such as transport disruption, power outages, and a small fire. In total, the simulation included 75 posts representing incoming media activity and 66 scheduled outbound posts from the festival organisers, each supported by realistic imagery. These posts were scheduled in advance to appear as a continuous live feed, creating the impression of real-time social media activity that students needed to monitor and respond to.

Producing this volume of coordinated content, imagery, and event communications would have been impractical to create manually. AI made it possible for a single educator to build a complex and immersive simulation that would otherwise have required a small communications team.
