My sister has power of attorney because I live out of the province from where he lives in BC. When my fathers illness became a burden my sister had him committed under the Mental Health Act.  I was not made aware of her actions when she did this to my father. Obviously because she wiped out his bank accounts and left him high and dry! He was left emotionally abused and financially abused and their was nothing I could do about it.  I have learned how vitally important it is to have a will  with it stating who will be the personal directive and what my last wishes will be if i ever become ill. I've realized how important it is to have things in order way ahead of time.

I became aware that my compliance to send my Grandma to a senior living facility without her knowledge is abusive behavior. I hope that all people can overcome some dysfunctional family dynamics in order to have an open dialogue that creates a plan for how the last stages of life will go. It's never too late to be "mature" and proactive.
