Direct-to-consumer advertising in the United States is popular among many medical entities. These advertisements may appear as print (magazines, newspapers), outdoor displays (billboards, vehicles), or electronically (television, radio, Internet). Additionally, health professionals may promote products or patients may offer personal testimonies publicly.

Because paid medical advertisements can be confusing to those with lower health literacy, there are some regulating agencies. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the American Medical Association (AMA) are two entities that help ensure advertisements are not deceptive or misleading.

Health information literacy is an ongoing issue in America. As technology continues to advance and more health information becomes available on the Internet, is has become essential for healthcare providers to be an active role in the education of their patients. Low health literacy has become a chronic condition for the average healthcare consumer. After researching multiple articles, most of the population understands how to navigate the internet to obtain information but remain unclear on how to interpret the information they have found. From a simple well check at the primary care doctor, to TV ads, and internet searches there are many resources available for the healthcare consumer. Understanding and synthesizing this information is the next step for healthcare consumers to develop a higher level of healthcare literacy.

There are many reputable and credible websites for patients to search and obtain good healthcare information. Most healthcare consumers have figured out a way to determine the good from the bad in the online setting. Truly understanding the information provided on reputable websites can be hard to understand or interpret. It is the patient’s responsibility to become informed; it is also their responsibility to ask questions they come up with from their internet searches and talk with their healthcare providers about their concerns. In an article explaining the knowledge and understanding of a diagnosis searched online by consumers, it was discovered that even after a thorough internet search, healthcare consumers still struggled to have a full understanding of a diagnosis (Kobayashi & Ishizaki, 2019). The results of the study indicate that the consumers lack the knowledge to understand the medical information (Kobayashi & Ishizaki, 2019). Further difficulty sorting through the search results and difficulty comparing and synthesizing the information was also found (Kobayashi & Ishizaki, 2019).

Non-medical healthcare consumers look to one popular website when wanting to know what their symptoms mean, what a disease can mean to them, or what the outcome is if diagnosed with something, this website is Google. Many are guilty of this kind of search, and everyone has “googled” a medical symptom or diagnosis at some point in their lives. Healthcare providers need to be the leading force in educating their patients on where to found credible information. Taking time to educate patients is the first step in helping them really understand what their diagnosis is, what it means, and potential symptoms. Providing written information about a diagnosis and providing and encouraging the use of credible websites can help patients further investigate their disease processes. Utilizing online platforms can also help patients connect with others who may be experiencing the similar medical issues.

With the ever evolving technology surrounding healthcare delivery, it is important to be healthcare literate. Healthcare information literacy is essential to understanding how to navigate one's healthcare journey. From knowing how to schedule a well check to a sick visit, to understanding a new diagnosis are all essential components to one's healthcare information literacy. Where does the average healthcare consumer obtain their healthcare information? How do they know that this information is accurate and that their source is credible? Where do primary care physicians come into play? Is the public influenced by TV, radio, and internet ad’s when it comes to their healthcare information?

Literate is defined as someone who can read, write, and have knowledge or competence on a specific topic (Definition of LITERATE, 2019). Information literacy is having the knowledge to know when you require additional information, knowing where to look for it, how to evaluate your findings, and knowing how to apply it to your individual needs (Sewell, 2019). However, how much does the average healthcare consumer really know about their own health, and can they be considered healthcare literate?

Most healthcare consumers are not medically trained, nor do they have a medical background. It is the responsibility of the healthcare provider to educate, reinforce, and follow-up with their patients. It is the responsibility of the healthcare consumer to educate themselves, learn about their new diagnosis, be compliant with the treatment plan provided by their physicians, and keep up with follow up appointments. With both parties agreeing to do their part, a higher level of healthcare literacy can be established in patients, leading to better patient outcomes.
