Comparison of Purposes

The overall purposes of Elie Wisel’s story was to inspire his audience to go out into the world and to make it a better place by treating everyone with equality and respect, every human life should be celebrated not destroyed. In Elie Wisel’s story he says, “ And therefore I say it to you: When you are now going into a world which is hounded, obsessed with so much violence, often so much despair — when you enter this world and you say the world is not good today, good! Correct it!” He wants his audience to go out into the world with more knowledge than they came in with and correct the world. In Wes Moore’s speech he encourages his audience that no matter how tough life gets you can always overcome your struggles. In his speech he says, “We live our lives, every single day, so that, when that conversation happens, there’s is only one thing that needs to be said to us, which is, “Job well done.”

“John was knocked out when he was driving. When John came to his right, and he saw his best friend dying next to him.” The author reminds the audience of a sad experience by informing them about the experiment of being in the armed forces. Two of Wes’ friends, John and Dale, were involved in an incident in which they got blown by an IED bomb. Dale was saved by the medics but he lost his legs. John had a brain injury called PTSD, and after had suicidal thought .

Strongest Appeals
Elie Wisel
The strongest appeal and the most effective in Elie Wisel’s speech was Logos. He used personal experiences to motivate and show his audience why the world needs changing. Elie Wisel says in his speech, “And today, fanaticism has reached an even lower point in its development: the fanatic who becomes a suicide murderer. That is a kind of atomic bomb. A suicide murderer who becomes himself, and, in some cases, herself, a weapon! They do not want simply to die. For that, they could simply jump into the ocean. They want to kill innocent people mainly, including children, and therefore that is an option that you must resist in your own life.” He persuades his audience by using strong and heavy language and making connections to his personal life and experiences. He shows his audience that all human life should be celebrated and wants the graduating class to change the world.
