Background

The importance of the teacher to develop an interest in learning English is very much needed, the teacher is considered a source of knowledge and a source of learning by students. Teachers in carrying out their functions can act as motivators, clarifiers, facilitators, dynamists, and good assessors. The role of the teacher as a motivator, dynamist and so on becomes very important in the world of educators. English is a tool for communicating orally and in writing. Communicating is understanding and expressing information, thoughts, feelings and developing science, technology and culture. The ability to communicate in a complete sense is the ability to discourse, namely the ability to understand and/or produce spoken and/or written texts that are realized in the four language skills namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. Learners don't know why English is important to them and their learning interest in learning English depends on their teacher.

Description text describes an object as a whole so that the reader understands it as if able to see, smell, touch, hear, and feel that object the author describes. Descriptive text is one of the material in learning Indonesian at the junior high school (SMP) level. Based on the 2013 Curriculum, this type of text is taught by teachers to class students VII. The curriculum currently used in the Indonesian education system is the 2013 Curriculum. The curriculum which has been implemented since 15 July 2013, is expected to be able to complement the Education Unit Level Curriculum2006 (KTSP 2006) which has been used in Indonesia for several yearsago. The change in the  curriculum brought quite a difference significant in the learning approach taken, one of which is on the Indonesian language learning approach.

     After conducting further studies, researchers found it differences in the development of language curricula that currently form the basis development of the 2013 Curriculum for Indonesian language subjects. If Curriculum The 2006 Education Unit Level used a communicative approach, in the 2013 Curriculum the approach used is a based approach genres. As explained in the Middle School Indonesian Syllabus.

     Curriculum 2013 Revised 2017, that the text in the genre approach is not interpreted as an article. However, the text is interpreted as embodiment social activities that have a social purpose, both orally and in writing. In the 2013 Curriculum, text is defined as a socially oriented process on social goals. The social goals to be achieved have the context of the situation and social processes. In achieving these social goals it is necessary means of communication, namely language so that the process takes place effectively. With Thus, social processes will reflect themselves into language in context situations that are compatible with social goals.

Literacy itself supports us to be able to receive new information that is factual (sorting through news). With the ability in reading we can improve our literacy skills, because literacy can help us to gain the knowledge we want to find out. Apart from being rich-knowledges in literacy, it can also train our public speaking skills especially in English. As quoted by Endang Kusripinah & Subrata (2022) states that this literacy will support a person’s ability to listening, speaking, reading and writing. And it also involves ability information, conveying information to drawing conclusions from personal point of view.

Reading skills are considered very important, especially in the world of language. According to Ruslan & Wibayanti (2019) the importance of reading activities is to increase insight or knowledges. The processes a text in reading activity; (1) understanding of reading (2) reading as a problem solving activity involving various sources of knowledges (3) and self correction as a sign of progress (Parlindungan et al., 2020). Also reading can help students develop empathy and emotional intelligence, as well as improve their critical thinking and analytical skills (Mar et al., 2006 in Barus et al., 2021).

In attracting students' interest in reading, there are many alternatives other than books that can be used. Because usually scientific books or just "books" (study books, education) easily make students bored. Learning to read doesn't just come from one media source (books) but can alternatively use e-books, novels, comics and others. But for some reason to learn by a science book we can modified as power point presentation and another else. As Tobing (2019) said, the one alternative to reading is using the internet. The large number of sites and applications about learning popping up makes it easier for internet users, most of whom are students, to find sources and information related to school assignments, deepen their knowledge about various topics, be able to develop certain skills/skills or talents and so on.

To facilitate students’ understanding, this learning used discovery learning method. The one of discovery learning is teaching by uses “lectures” as a form of delivering the material or can be called storytelling. And then as a way of teaching that involves students in the process of mental  activity through exchange of opinions, with discussions, seminars, read it yourself and try it yourself, so that child can learning on their own (Roestiyah, 2012). According to Ilahi (2012) in Sari et al., (2017) there are several steps in discovery learning (1) providing stimulation, (2) problem identification, (3) data collection, (4) data processing, (5) verification and (6) conclusion.

With the discovery learning method, students can practiced independent learning and how to find the way out of problem. As cited by Aston (2015) the use of discovery learning is only for changing the passive learning to be active and creative, changing the teacher oriented concept to the student oriented. It can be concluded that learning using this method can be effective because of the ability to change students’ passive attitudes into active and creative.

An any teacher have many ways to teaching reading, as a creative teacher surely you will follow each student’s progress in learning, not student’s who follow us (the teacher). By creating an interactive and fun learning environment in the classroom, this will attract students’ interest in reading as well as adapting to their teaching style. Successful teachers who teach reading realize that reading can be taught using various strategies. Teaching should be modified by the teachers depending on the student’s needs (Pandiangan et al., 2021).

The application of the learning concept this time is by (1) the teacher giving a brief explanation of the narrative text material. Then (2) students will be given an assignment in the form of interpreting the story using a dictionary, google translate or other tools. After that (3) students will be assigned to re-read the story in English via voice note which will be sent via Google Classroom (GC). Where the student’s ability (after sending a voice note in GC) will be assessed after the teacher provides an example of reading the text before being given an assignment.

Based on the place/students that were the subject of my research in the school when I was teaching, students could not read even though the nature of reading was basic (alphabet). There are several factors that make students unable to read, the first is that students were hampered by the covid virus at that time which made school online and many students were not actively attending. Second, students could not understand reading in English when at that time there was also an earthquake that hit the city, so learning was carried out in tents or was not effective. As a result, in teaching here I try to be interactive and follow their wishes in learning.

So researcher decided on the research title “The Use of Discovery Learning Method in Reading Narrative Text for 9^th Grade of Junior High School” with the aim of applying the Discovery Learning model to improve students’ reading skills.

The capacity to express vivid imagery through descriptive tales not only enhances linguistic abilities but also encourages creativity and critical thinking in a society where effective communication is becoming more and more important. This paper investigates the relationship between writing and imagination, looking at instructional approaches that use narrative stories to improve students' writing skills. We hope to offer educators and students alike new perspectives and useful strategies for improving written expression and communication arts by revealing the many levels of this narrative fabric.

CORBUZIER IN HITAM PUTIH TALK SHOW

What I gather from the paper is that the researcher analyzed a politeness strategy used in TV talk shows, revealing the presence of four distinct politeness strategies. The reason I chose this paper as a reference is due to its similarity in variables and its relevance to the topic.

What I got from the journal article was that the researcher explored the use of PJBL for students' writing skills. Researchers used qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, for qualitative data information was obtained through interviews, observation checklists, questionnaires, and  essays test for quantitative data. The researcher used descriptive text material by carrying out 2 cycles of the CAR method. The results of this research showed that students experienced improvement after learning using the PJBL model, so it can be said that the PJBL learning model is very effective in improving the English writing skills of junior high school students. That was the reason I chose this journal article as a reference because I chose the same learning model, namely PJBL, to improve students' writing skills even though the material was different from the researchers', because I chose Label Text material.

What I got from this journal as a previous study is that this journal has the same variables and analyzes the reading in the textbook. And the design method used is the same, namely using descriptive qualitative.

What I got from the paper was the researcher analyzed the types of speech acts used by the main character in “Spongebob Squarepants’ the movie. Researcher used descriptive qualitative research in explaining of speech acts types used by the main character. The finding of this research showed that the directives speech act was the most frequently in SpongeBob SquarePants the movie. I chose this article as a reference because it has a similar topic to my research article. Although there is a difference in the movie I chose, namely Toy Story.

The reason I chose this article as a reference is because the topics discussed are relevant to the articles I want to make. The things that get from this article are explaining the politeness strategy used in Mata Najwa Talk. The method used is qualitative research design. The result obtained is that the host not only uses positive politeness but also negative politeness. But the guests tend to use positive politeness.

I chose this article to be one of my references because it has a similar variable to my research article.

-         Research question : Junior high school students’ perceptions in using TikTok apps in English language class.

-         Method : Qualitative

-         Instrument : interview

-         Findings: Students have positive perception of the use of TikTok apps.

-         The reason why I choose this article is because the variable of the research is same as mine.

And then the method also same as mine.

After I read this article, I found an article about "The use of double match picture media for teaching Reading Comprehension". The article discusses improving students' mastery of reading comprehension and learning motivation in junior high school.

This research uses the triangulation method, namely observation, interviews, and tests to collect data. As a result, most students become interested and motivated to read during the teaching and learning process.

I chose this article because it is one of my references for variables that are similar to my research article.
