Session 1 - Drums

This session was the start of our recording session, we all decided on recording a Reggae cover of Learn To Fly by the Foo Fighters in which we recorded the Drums first, in order of Kick, Toms, Hi-hats and Sizzle. We chose to use the AKG D3500 (Large Diaphram Dynamic) two SM57's and 2 of the AKG C3300's, the reason we chose to use these types of microphones is because they can handle the High SPL's where if we were to use condensers for example the SM7B you would risk damaging the Coil inside the microphone. therefore by using a dynamic we were able to capture the sounds we wanted without damaging the microphone. We also went down to a cave in where we captured various different sounds using our imaginations which was really cool we got some great sounds recorded even managed to create our own reverb FX too which was very clever.

Session 2 - Bass

in this particular session we focused on tracking the bass for the recording. we setup a bass amp in which, we hooked up a bass guitar. We did various different takes of the guitar in which we chose to use the AKG 35000 (Large Diaphram Dynamic) with a cardioid polar pattern the reason we chose a dynamic is again because with the bass it is quite hot in terms of sound caviler so to stop the risk of damaging the microphone we chose Dynamic as it is able to capture louder sounds without causing damage were with condensers would get damaged easily as they are more fragile, we also chose to use an AKG D112 a Electro Voice RE320 and finally an audio technicia 4041 in which we used FX pedals to add body and character to the overall mix.

Session 3 - Synthesizer

This session was a fun session, we focused this session of capturing synth sounds using different FX synthesizers we used various different Pedal board's in which we hooked up to a guitar experimenting with different FX pedals. This added punch and created a lot of energy which the end result sounded wicked. my group decided on the shure SM57 a small diaphragm Dynamic microphone with a cardioid polar pattern which we used an Guitar Amp as our internal loudspeaker for amplifying the audio coming from the guitar, we positioned the SM57 nearfield from the amplifier so that we could capture the sound and send it back to the studio so we could monitor it. By using FX pedals we were able to beef up the overall mix and give the guitars a more rocky feel.

this is our very last recording session before the mixing stages. for this session we chose to use the AKG perception 420 (Large Diaphragm Condenser) the reason being is that this microphone in particular packs a punch, it offers a warm crisp sound with a high sensitivity response. by using the AKG we were able to get a nice crisp sound with great detail and sharpness without any Low end muddiness also this microphone in particular has the option of changing the polar pattern meaning you can have it either Cardioid, Omni, Bi Direct, or figure of eight this was ideal for us as can capture the sound at different angles rather than straight in the middle.

Session 5 - Mixing

everything is recorded, now it is time to put everything together, we started to work on the arrangement. We added a tiny bit of EQ to the vocals in which we chose to take out abit of the muddiness in the low end frequencies by using a high pass filter this allowed for the high end to pass through without the low end taking up the mix, we were careful and visual when doing this as what we didnt want was a find sounding vocal. we also added some Reverberation to the voice in which we chose to use the space designer plugin, we tweaked the setting till we were happy with it. we then had a listen to the overall arrangement, i was'nt very happy they missed my variation out completely but all in all sounded a really great recording.
