Instead, I found one more about the new role of the parents because of the "Double Reduction Policy" started in the fall of 2021. 

Even better, the article discusses challenges and strategies for English learning in this post - reduction policy/COVID world. 

This has been something that I have been dealing with all academic year. The role of the parent has shifted now that many of these after school programs are shut down. They worry about their child's progress, even at the youngest of ages. This was a good read and inspired me to do a little more research after this. I hope that this policy will actually get China thinking about getting parents more involved and seeing the child as a whole, not just based on test scores. They also have the sessions talking about differentiation in the IBDP classrooms, which really catches my eyes. I want to know and learn how to differentiate better in the high school lessons. Students firstly grouped up to do some research on tea and coffee. They have made some amazing posters and presentation. After their presentations, we talked about "coffee shop/cafe" culture, so I asked my students to think about what is their ideal or dream coffee shops look like. One group of my student came up with the coffeeshop with LGBTQ flags and special design and drinks. And they were able to introduce their ideas in Chinese! We started the semester very well planned out. Our big events were in the calendar (science fair, book fair, sports day) and I was excited to do these things with my students. I was also excited to think of fun and interesting ways to engage the students too. I am in charge of making math materials for my grade, and I had so many great projects where the kids would get messy and do a lot of hands on work. Well.....one Friday we left school and then Sunday evening were told we would be online for the foreseeable future. I was pretty crushed. 

I had not really had much experience with online learning (besides the first Covid outbreak). I think everyone was learning how to do it, especially working with DingTalk as a platform (and not being about to use websites without a VPN). Taking the TeachNow course, we kept learning about new ways to engage students, great web resources, and learning how to work in "breakout rooms". But all of these, were not really accessible for me. I also felt the pressure to have to use these when we got to Clinical Practice as well. 

Well I kept persisting! My mentor has been amazing and really supportive. She has great feedback and ideas. I think that she really pushed me to be more aware of the Standards in my lessons and try to engage as many students as I possibly can. I used whatever tools that were available for me on DingTalk and got creative in how to use them. It was a lot of work, but all if it really paid off. The kids now have their own virtual whiteboards and earn Pokemon as achievements in class. They have their own version of breakout rooms that they enjoy chatting and sharing in. I think I feel proud of my work and being resilient in the face of this online learning. It is different, I don't like it, but I still manage everyday to get up and give those kids the best possible day they could have! We have been having fun giving each other things to do during the weeks. We meet every week to review the submissions and crown a new taskmaster for the week. 

One week, when I was in charge, I had them draw Pikachu blind and then also create their own Pokemon using a cool website. 

I think that it all gave us a chance to have fun while the world around us seemed so grim. It made me smile each week seeing the creativity and humor of my coworkers.
