One differently-abled individual who has inspired me is Nur'Aini Mohamad Yasli, a Singaporean powerlifter who made history at the recent Tokyo Paralympics. She was born with a congenital impairment in her legs, which gave her a short stature and had to undergo multiple surgeries. Despite her condition, she is very active in sports, dabbling with archery, dragonboat, swimming and eventually found her talent in powerlifting. Her motto, 'People have the mindset that impaired people have lesser abilities. But when they see that you have the strength too, they look at you in a different light.', serves as a huge inspiration for me. Whenever I feel troubled or unsure of myself, I think about Nur Aini and the strength that she possesses and look for it within myself to face life's obstacles too.

I strongly believe that I can only be truly proud of something I have done when I overcome any hardship or challenges that life throws at me. To me, that is real achievement. One thing that I am particularly proud of was conquering my fear of heights when I scaled Mount Batur in Bali. Despite the strong urge to give up, I managed to summon all my faith and pressed on to catch the sunrise at the peak. It was an indescribable feeling to be enshrouded with the cotton-like clouds and the infinite sky. The second thing that I am proud of is that I managed to stick to something despite how fickle-minded and wishy washy I can be and that is; teaching. I'm glad that I have dedicated close to a decade's worth of my service to something that is both challenging and rewarding at the same time.

I agree to a large extent with this statement. Firstly, success is something that is elusive- that is difficult to achieve or hard to find. If everyone can find success so easily, then success loses its worthiness or value. (Point) For example, many online influencers such as Jake Paul, create senseless content to catapult themselves to fame in a matter of days. (Example) Some even managed to clinch successful careers without having to work for it. (Elaborate) Success should only be granted to those who are patient, disciplined and driven to go after their goals. (Explain) It is only when their blood, sweat and tears are shed will success become meaningful and valuable in the end. (Elaborate)

i do agree that success is more meaningful when it is hard earned .
The feeling right after succeeding after a long time is indeed very satisfactory.Without hard work it’s hard to succeed. We all need to try our very best and never give up to achieve what we want. Then with all our hard work put in it will all be worth it at the end when we look back and realize that hard work is important to succeed. As the saying goes “hard work beats talent”. This quote is true as talent can only get us so far, but with hard work and determination we can easily achieve what we want.

For example, a determined mindset can't be bought or felt when you dont overcome a challenge which is an important thing to have as it is useful to achieve greater success even if you have the talent but no determination, all that talent will go to waste once you reach an dead end. At the end of the day, after pouring all your blood, sweat and tears on trying to reach greater heights and pushing yourself to the limit , the feeling of achievement is greater than getting a achievement easily.

I agree with this statement. Not saying that success is less meaningful when not hard-earned, but then you work so hard, you put in your one hundred percent effort to see the result you expected then it feels even more meaningful. To be able to know that you’ve made it where you are due to your diligence and perseverance. If its easy then what’s the point, i feel that its the journey one travels that is more significant than the destination. What’s the point in being successful if you didn’t earn it. For example the leaps points we get 2 point minus off our o levels, this leaps systems shows the hard working put in it requires students to go CCA regularly and contribute during their time in school. If everyone was able to received the 2 points there’s no point towards it. Then school schools should just reduce their entry grade by 2.

If I had to choose a single person out of all of the differently-abled individuals who have inspired me in one way or another, it would have to be Stephen Hawking. Stephen Hawking was one of the greatest physicists to ever exist. Hawking had a form of motor neurone disease, known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord, which slowly paralysed him as his life progressed.

Even with such a condition which basically ruined his life, he achieved many notable things in life. He has greatly contributed to the understanding of gravity, black holes and cosmology. Many people may have underestimated his abilities as he was not able to communicate at all. However, he used assistive technology to compensate for mobility and speech difficulties. He used a thumb switch and a blink-switch attached to his glasses to control his computer.

This shows that even with a disease that deprived of the most basic things a human can do, he never gave up and continued to persevere and contribute to society till he passed away. One thing i have learnt from him would be to never give up no matter how hard things get.

A differently-abled individuals who inspire me is Steven Hawking. Stephen Hawking was regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists in history. His work on the origins and structure of the universe, from the Big Bang to black holes, revolutionised the field.
He inspired me as he actually lived a normal life till was diagnosed with an early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis– ALS, for short). That cause him to be paralysed and is unable to talk. He is only able to communicate through a speech-generating device initially through use of a handheld switch.
Diagnosing ALS did not knockout but he actually treat it as a stepping stone. He collaborated with other mathematician to come with Hawking Radiation. Following the publication of further research, the discovery was widely accepted as a major breakthrough in theoretical physics. He achieved commercial success with several works of popular science.
I can learn from Hawking is that don't give up when we meet setbacks or obstacles. But to strive back, learn from it and become a better person.

Joan Hung said that her disability didn't allow her to learn how to ride a bike properly, however she used this opportunity to make use of her disability to help her learn, she said in a sport conference with her coach Hansen Bay" Some skills, like maybe learning how to ride a bike was also a bit difficult for them to teach me. So, I had to learn it on my own, but they gave me the space to kind of learn and make my own mistakes, to figure things out. This kind of helped me to focus on what I couldn't make use of it." Her statement showed me that she preserved and strive to do her best in a sport or activity and never gave up, these are some things we, cant even do.

I would say im a strong person because i dont cry easily when i am being bullied, instead i would stand up for myself and prove to them that i am so much more than what they are describing me as a person, i would say im independent because i do not rely on people to help me, i live by the motto "you came to earth alone, you survive on your own" i would rather get things done my way and own up to the prices and consequences i have to face or pay, but i could always say that it was my doing and i take full responsibility for the outcome

I always try to look for the positive things in life and always try to appreciate the little things in life.
Even when something bad happened that day, I still try to find something positive.

I am proud of myself for finally being able to stand up for myself. For the past few years, I have been very harsh on myself. I used to blame myself for everything. I found myself apologising for things I did not even do. Soon, I found that very tiring. I took some time for myself and reflected about it during the holidays. I must say that apologising can be a good thing but it can start having a negative impact on your life. Once you start apologising for everything, your sub-conscious starts to accept the fact that you always do things wrongly and that you are bad at everything when in fact, you might have not committed the so called mistake. I am proud that I "saved" myself before i fell into that continuous cycle of negativity.

I am proud of myself for trying to learn self love and being accepting of myself, and also advocating for it because I truly believe it is a form of respect towards myself and others. For example, recently there has been people who would pick on certain people just because they are alone ad implying they have no friends etc, when they are really just introverted and prefer to be alone, I genuinely felt a sense of pity towards these people as I wonder how insecure they feel about themselves that they have to make another person feel bad, i believe the word for it is Projecting. To me, Loving one self is of utmost importance as it displays how much you value and respect yourself, which will then allow others to see your worth and respect you as well. On the other hand, if one does not have self love, they would not value their own worth and yet they seek worthiness from external factors. These factors may be belittling someone to make the other person feel bad so they can feel better about themselves, or even possess a constant need to seek attention from others. Therefore i am proud of learning to love myself and advocating for it.

One example is that I am thankful that I was born healthy and that I could live normally without physical difficulty. There are ample things that I am proud of myself though being thankful with what I am given is one of my favourite things to reflect on myself. Oftentimes, I hear articles about people wanting to have more of what they have already which sometimes struck me as there would be times that I felt that way. However, I would spend some time reflecting on myself every week by writing down my day. By doing this, it helps me by giving me a bigger picture of myself as a person.

Being a introvert and shy person, speaking up has always been a big challenge and obstacle for me. When I first came to this school, the first struggle I had was making friends as I am not a sociable person. What helped me to gain more self confidence and be able to speak up would be my CCA. Being in a uniform group, it requires me to teach my juniors drills and other stuff. So being able to speak up and lead was a big part. If being successful is easy, the whole world would be rich. For example, formula one drivers wouldn't be in the race car if they had not raced hard since young. Only the best drivers would be in formula 1.

I certainly agree. I feel that success can be found in many things. For example, reaching my goal of getting a certain grade or finally getting a role that I have wanted for a while. Small successes like these might sometimes be the biggest. The hard work that we put into these small successes might sometimes make us think, 'i did it'. Without hard work, we would have probably not have the chance to achieve these small successes, let alone the big successes. Only with hard work will we be able to conquer these small challenges and achieve what we hope for.

When I work hard for something and the results are satisfactory, there is this particular feeling that I enjoy a lot. Efforts and hard work must be put in to achieve success. I think that success must go through various obstacles before reaching the finish line. overcoming obstacles makes me feel a sense of accomplishment if i already given my 120 percent. For example some people choose to go the easy way out that will not reach anywhere far. Like copying or stealing other people work, taking credit that they should not deserve.
In conclusion i think that success should be achieve by oneself when they put in a lot of blood and sweat into the work.

I strongly believe the statement as if success is just given to you without any hardwork or putting in any effort, it isnt considered success. It will just be a stepping stone before you actually achieve it. Success isnt something you can get with money or from a higher power with connections, or it will feel worthless. One must start from the very bottom and slowly build their way up. The journey may not be easy, but the experiences and the things one learns through the journey is what makes success at the end of the day feel so valuable and worthwhile. That sense of fulfilment once you reach the top knowing how much was sacrificed and the effort put in, is what makes the term "success", success.

Even more the fact that there would be success after knowing that you have put in your all for your goal. I feel that success will not come freely to anyone if there was no effort or thought into the goal you are aiming for. A quote that I heard from somewhere, 'If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail' which taught me a valuable lesson that I have to put my earnest effort in order to grasp any success that I was aiming for at the end of the day. An example would be taking my time at home to do at least a few math questions so that I would be able to be better at it.

i agree that success is more meaningful when its hard-earned, i feel that its the feeling u feel when you know you've done your best, put in your heart and soul in doing a certain activity. For example, when katy perry accepted the offer of being the cover of forbes, she posted on her instagram saying "There is a difference between being humble and working hard to see the fruits of your labor blossom, and your dreams realized," this elaborated on how katy felt when she know that she has put in the hard work for her fans and in he music career. Personally i grow up with the motto that if i work hard i will get mu success im looking for, and that simply not the case. There will be times where we realise that even hard work and all the effort put in may not give us the result we are looking for. But its when u know u did u best and put in hard work , work with blood sweat and tears ,preserved through ups and down and finally got the success you are looking for.. That feeling is so addictive

I agree with this statement. Firstly, success is not something that comes by easily, you have to put in effort to achieve it. For example, Walt Disney. Before he designed the world famous character Mickey Mouse that eventually created history, he went through a rough patch. At the age of 22, he went bankrupt after the brutal failure of a cartoon series in Kansas City. He was also once fired by a newspaper editor who accused him of lack of imagination and creativity. " All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them" - Walt Disney. This supports the fact that success can only be truly achieved by those who are willing to work their hardest even through the toughest of times.

A differently-abled individual who inspires me is Franklin D. Roosevelt. At the age of 39, he suffered a paralytic illness. Because of this disease he was unable to walk again and had to use a wheelchair. Despite his illness, he supervised the mobilisation of the U.S. economy to support the war effort and implemented an Europe First strategy, initiating the Lend Lease program and defeating Germany. He worked with other Allied leaders to lay the groundwork for the United Nations and other post-war institutions. His wartime leadership was applauded worldwide. Roosevelt inspires me because he was someone who could have chosen to use his illness as an excuse but instead chose to lead America through its war.
