The majority of people involved were homosexual men. The beginning of this hysteria began when 41 cases of rare cancer called Kaposi's Sarcoma had been diagnosed in New York City in all gay men. Since most people did not know much about AIDS they did not really think about how it spread and what the effects of it were. A lot of people actually thought you could get AIDS just by touching someone who had it or coming into contact with something they had come into contact with also. People thought if you were gay that you automatically had AIDS. They also thought that if you had been around a gay person and exposed to them that you had AIDS. The gay community had taken the hardest hit for the entire thing. Many people became homophobic during this time and hated homosexual people. A pedestrian was run over by a motorist and the driver wanted to know how to decontaminate his vehicle because he had believed the man he had hit had AIDS. A British AIDS victim had been entombed in a concrete cemetery in North Yorkshire "just in case" they ever decided to open the coffin again. The whole hysteria was mostly brought about when several people started getting diagnosed with Kaposi's Sarcoma at about the same time. Some people that had AIDS would be assumed to have been homosexual or drug addicts, even if they really were not either.
