On Monday the 22nd of July, our first lesson back in maternity in early childhood: visual and creative arts, we explored what we can do with paper, what is paper capable and what exactly can paper do. There are a number of things I discovered when playing with paper such as you can wrap paper, you can rip paper, you can wear paper, you can throw paper, you can cut paper and you can fold paper.

I decided to create a hat with magazine paper as it allowed me to easily move and be flexible with the paper not matter what. I found that the only way the hat would stay in the right position was if i put sticky tape on it to hold it down.

When making the paper hat i felt a sense of achievement and freedom as paper really does allow you to move and create anything you want to within many limitations.

Week 2, on Monday 29th of July, our focus for the week was junk stuff. We watched a video on how children can play with absolutely anything they are given. In this video children were playing with old junk stuff and lose parts.

Loose parts are materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and taken apart and put back together in multiple ways. They are materials with no specific set of directions that can be used alone or combined with other materials.

Loose parts can be natural or synthetic. In a preschool outdoor environment we can provide an array of loose parts for use in play such as stones, stumps, sand, gravel, fabric, twigs, wood, pallets, balls, buckets, baskets, crates, boxes, logs, stones, flowers, rope, tyres, balls, shells and seedpods.

Junk stuff and loose parts can basically make and create anything an individual can think of. A stick, for example, may become a fishing rod near real or a tool to nudge a football that is stuck in a tree.

Junk and loose parts can be thrown, floated, snapped, pinged, bent, hidden, added to a pile, burnt, tied to something else, split, catapulted or discarded.

I really enjoyed learning about junk stuff and loose parts as I didn't realise how much things you can make and how children allow there imagine to make and design absolutely anything.

On Friday, of week 2 I decided to read the beautiful stuff, learning with found materials article. I really enjoyed reading this article as i found it really interesting. This article was overall very well linked to the topic for this week junk and loose parts.

One really interesting part of the reading was the part with children drawing themselves by looking and viewing there image in a mirror and drawing it onto a piece of paper.

What I found interesting was how the mirror invite the child to draw his own reflection and his own face. What i found good about this little activity was how the teacher and child worked together to explore the face and features together.

I believe that allowing a child to draw his or her own reflection gives them more self confidence to become and notice the person that they are and not always worry about how other people view and judge them.

Week 3, our focus for the week was clay. I decided to play with the clay and see what sort of things I could make. When picking the clay up I noticed the clay reacted by moving in any direction for example when I poked it, squeezed it, hit it, picked it up and back down again. Every time I moved the clay or did something different with the clay, the clay adjusted and responded no matter what.

For me, the stories that the clay holds and memories that I remember is when I was younger I used to play with clay and design/make anything I could think of. As a child I was automatically naturally fascinated, motivated, and empowered to keep experimenting.

Working with clay is so different to work with junk stuff and loose parts as with clay it is natural and with junk parts it’s kind of everything and not really natural materials. With clay you can manipulate it better than what you can do with loose parts and junk stuff.

We decided to make our stop motion video on a storm with clouds, lighting and rain. The artwork created and seen below by Rosslynd Piggott inspired us to come up with this idea.

Week 4, our focus for the week was light and experimenting with light, shadow and transparency. Light is a type of energy known as electromagnetic radiation. It is given out by hot objects such as the Sun, light bulbs, and lasers. When light hits a surface, its energy can be absorbed (soaked up), reflected or deflected by refraction.

When it comes to light it gives us the opportunity to think with shadow because if your standing out in the sun your body blocks some of the sun's light, causing a shadow to form in front of you. The shadow takes on the shape of your body. When the sun is in front of you, the shadow forms behind you. If the sun is to your left, then the shadow forms to your right. Thats the same if you put your hand over light then you no longer see anything apart from your shadow.

Light comes from anything that is warm or , including living things. In class today we worked with over head projectors to display and project light from a small screen to a larger screen.
