Through the Olympics competition between the United States and the Soviet Union was created during the Cold War in a few ways. Through competition, the United States and the Soviet Union competed to win against each other. When the United States boycotted against the Soviet Union after they invaded Afghanistan, USSR also boycotted the Olympics when the United States hosted and made sure that their allies also boycotted the Olympics when the United States hosted. This created a competition for who and which country can boycott the most.

The Olympics during the Cold war and now:

Now, during the Olympics just like during the Cold War, there are disagreements against each other (countries) and rules.
Even if there aren’t boycotts that are as significant as during the Cold War, there are protests and boycotts against the countries that are participating or hosting the Olympics. During the Cold War, competing against each other created tension between the United States and the USSR which also brought tension against their own allied countries. In the current years, there are less tension or "sides" that countries pick when competing in the Olympics.
