A challenge and success would be planning for only 3 students. Some of the systematic ELD lessons seem to be more structured for a whole class and so having only limited time each day with a few kids needs adjustments. But the success is also only having 3 students and getting that small group instruction to really hear what each child is saying. Really being able to take the time to work in their language and vocabulary and build that connection with them that allows for them to open up.

Something that surprised me was how much the curriculum not only taught students language tools, but also just seeing how much it applies to their own personal lives. Something we learned about was Code Switching, and we often refer back to that when discussing classroom behavior and when they are writing in ELA.

One challenge I have is staying on task to the lesson. Sometimes, I find myself wanting to break down the lesson into smaller parts. For example, we are on the identifying emotions/feelings lesson and I wanted to have my students start writing down their emotions and feelings + giving a reason why they feel that way. I made the lesson longer than it's intended for. In addition, I struggle knowing if I am doing the lesson correctly or not even after seeing a demo lesson. I think it's my lack of confidence in teaching ELD.

My main challenges are that I pull a group of 13 beginning 1st & 2nd grade students with a variety of language needs combined with some big behavior needs. I plan for a full lesson and realistically only get through a small chunk each day. In addition, we review a lot for the repetition whick leaves us working on one lesson for a week. My main success is that the repetition pays off and teachers have shared that the students are speaking more in class :-)

Maybe that's a good thing because students get more exposure to the topic/practice.

Successes: students are practicing the language. The slide are helpful.
