As a teacher how can you combine the advantages of a smaller class size with the advantages of a large class size to make sure students are learning to their full potential? Please respond to one other student's response giving a critique or compliment to their strategy and how you think it might play out in the classroom.

As a teacher, I would try to focus on combining the independence that stems from a large class size and the cooperation from a small class size. In my class room, I would want students to know each other enough (like in a small classroom) where they feel comfortable to ask each other for help first because coming to me (like in large classrooms). However, if their peers don't know the answer, I would want them to feel comfortable enough to come to me to answer that questions and explain it. This allows students to grow not only in the knowledge of the subject, but also socially.
-Emily Venis

As a teacher, I would combine the advantages of both a small and large class together. I will do this by having more partner activities where students can meet new students. I will let students peer edit their writing and let partner's grade quizzes. This allows students to interact more with new students. This allows the student interaction that they would get through a smaller class size. I will also include time for students to work independently and then check answers with their peers. The independence would be what the students would be getting from a larger class size.

As a teacher, I would focus on combining the sociability of large and small classrooms and develop lessons and opportunities for the students to have more interaction with each other. Allowing students to work with each other in groups (for large classes) helps the students to grow, both academically and socially. In smaller classes, having the students work either one-on-one or in groups of three will allow them to develop social skills and leadership skills. Also, this helps me as a teacher learn what does and doesn't work for both small and large class sizes, and I can then modify lessons to help benefit the students in the future. The results from student interaction also allows me to see which students are succeeding and which need extra help, so I can pair students together and have students who understand the subject help teach it to their partner or partners and take on the role as a leader in their group.

-Brian Conway

As a teacher in order to combine them I will focus on solving the disadvantage of both and smaller and bigger classroom. For example, in a smaller class size the students have more one on one time with the teacher in a bigger class size that isn't always the case. In order to have that one on one I might leave comments on assignments turned in by my students and set up office hours so I can give students a chance to get more time with me outside of the classroom. I will encourage partner/group work so that students are sharing ideas others in the classroom so that they get new and fresh perspectives on assignments.
- Reese Racila

Both small and large class sizes have many advantages. In a large class, students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and rely on their classmates and outside resources for help before coming directly to the teacher for help when they struggle. This classroom environment enforces independence. In a small class, the learning is more intimate. Students form a closer relationship with their teacher, their classmates, and the material they are learning. In an effort to combine these advantages and make the "best of both worlds", I, as the teacher, would be sure to establish myself as a figure of authority. I would be sure to make it known to my students that I am not going to be holding their hand every step of the way in class in an effort to promote independence. I will also, however, make it clear that I am always there to offer advice, answer any thoughtful questions or clarify any material. I still want to create an environment where students feel comfortable talking to me but I don't want them to constantly rely on my help.

As a student I’ve always been more successful in smaller classes because I am able to ask my teacher for more feedback and because I feel like in smaller classes teachers tend to be more flexible with due dates so there’s less pressure. As a teacher if I were given a class on the bigger side I would still try to make it possible for my students to have time with me so that they can learn and not just complete the assignments for points, to make this happen I could conference with each child periodically if possible or take time and give them thorough comments on their assignments. With that being said I also believe that having a larger class is beneficial because it allows for more independence and students can see what works for them. So combining these styles of teaching in a classroom no matter the size would be varying lessons to have some independent work but also work where students can use me as a resource.

Personally I enjoy a small class size for the advantages it provides including more time and help from the teacher. I also see the benefits of a large class size. Larger classes provide more student interaction. As a future educator it is important to combine these benefits in order to make a classroom that is suitable for all students. I can do this in my classroom by setting aside time to talk to all students about their work and progress in my class. I will also plan activities that make students interact with each other making them get to know each other better in order to create a more comfortable learning environment for my students.
