Heed that “we.” Though she’s been hailed countless times as a kind of smirking outsider come to save country music from itself, Musgraves in “Merry Go Round” is singing from well inside the genre’s psychic core. In a song about settling for what you know (as opposed to what you want), it’s the “we” that devastates.

It's a song about the cultural norms of a southern state small town, including factors that most people outside of the culture wouldn't fully understand. The song contributes a sense of kinship with the term "we" in lyrics like, "We get bored, so, we get married/Just like dust, we settle in this town." The song holds a significant meaning to anyone who comes from a small town and can relate to the lyrics on a personal level. I come from a town who population is under a thousand and where the only relevant things we have are a school and a gas station. More than half of the town fits the stereotype that Kasey Musgraves describes in "Merry Go 'Round".
