Congratulations on your admissions to the BSPH program! I look forward to working with each one of you! I am the Sr. Academic Advisor for the COPH. I’ve been with the College since spring 2017. Initially, all my work duties were with the undergraduate students who were pursuing the newly established Bachelor of Science in Population Health. I had a total of 12 students to work with that semester. I now work with around 100 students in the BSPH. In fall 2018 I started to work with the MPH students as well. I graduated from UNM in 2007. After working for 3 years, I decided to explore the world. In 2010 I went backpacking in South America, New Zealand, Australia, and parts of Asia. I had an extended stay in India. And I lived in Mexico for a few years. In Mexico, I worked as an instructor and coordinator of bilingual programs. I returned to the USA in 2014. In addition to working at UNM, I am also a trainer and friendly barista at Starbucks. My name is Kim Toya. I am from Taos Pueblo and Jemez Pueblo. The picture above is my family. I am a older student, I left school when I got pregnant with my oldest, now he is a senior in high school. Oh, how time flies but I am on my way to finish my degree in PH. 
My over all goal is to become a Public Health Nurse in a Tribal setting but taking a grand detour with jumping into PH first to assist me to gain insight by becoming a community health specialist and working within the tribal sector. 
I enjoy going hiking in the mountains of Taos year round with my family. I also enjoy baking with my daughter, nothing unique in this but its the quality time with my family that I enjoy the most!

My research interests would be in Epidemiology and doing clinical research for either the goverment or a private health insurance company. Some professional goals that I have in mind is going for my masters in Public Health. While I am in this program, I would like to get to know more of the avenues I can take. I know PH has a lot of routes you can go through and I would like to at least touch some aspect in each field.
