He tells them the names of the islands, Santa Maria de la Concepcion, San Salvador Fernandina, Isabella, Espanola and lastly Juana. He says they have many different things to offer ranging from drugs to gold to spices. Columbus describes the verity of the landscapes.

Columbus describes Espanola as a lush beautiful paces with rolling hills and fields great for harvesting. I think he describes this island the way he does because it is the island he named after the country and he doesn't want them to feel disrespected in any way. Also he is trying very hard to make the island seem like such a great concept, he wants to be known as such a great explorer.

Columbus makes it seem as though there are a great number of indigenous people while never explicitly saying how many of them there are. He also says that he took them without resistance witch i find very hard to believe witch most likely means he wants it seem as though he is so all powerful.

I do not think it is right to celebrate a day that brought so much hate and devastation to millions of indigenous people. In my opinion witch is no greater or less valid than any other person is that Columbus did not "discover" a new land because if he had there would not have been any people there for them to enslave kill and torture. Columbus opened a door for the people that came after him to spread cruelty and negativing. He opened the door that would later lead to the colonization of the U.S we celebrate our country's freedom yet we celebrate the man who enabled our colonization. We should not celebrate a man who thought only of himself and his own fame. Who killed millions and opened the door for others to do so also.

1. Columbus describes the resources that each island offers and the reactions of the native people. He describes the islands as beautiful and fruitful. He also explains how some people cooperated when he took over them and how some didn't.
2. He describes the island of Espanola as having a lot of natural resources because the king and queen want more items to trade to gain wealth. He also wants to make the island sound fantastic so he himself may gain a reward for finding it.
3. He describes the people as thinking he is from heaven and praising him. He said that when he arrived at any island the natives brought him offerings and seemed overjoyed that he was there.
4. I do not think we should celebrate Columbus Day because the natives treated him with a lot of respect and kindness and he enslaved and killed them soon after. He basically took advantage of their kindness and hospitality. Taking advantage of people in a cruel way to gain fame is not something that should be celebrated.

1. In Columbus's letters, describes the new land in a way that makes it sound like a dream land. Like it has all the resources that they need and plenty of space for farming. He explains that the native people there listen to him and will do what he says, he also says that they can communicate by hand gestures. He makes himself sound very responsible by saying that he took the necessary precautions for the men he left behind.
2. He describes the new land in a way that makes it sound like it has everything that they need, and lots of it. He makes this land sound so beautiful so that people recognize him as a better person and so that they will be excited about the new land. If he didn't describe it like this then Ferdinand and Isabella might not fund any more trips.
3. He talks about the natives like they are great and they always listen to him. He says that they can communicate with hand gestures.
Columbus Day:
I do not think we should celebrate Columbus Day. Columbus was a rude, attention thirsty, liar. He sailed over to the Americas and intruded, took peoples land and belongings, enslaved them, and slaughtered them. He was extremely greedy. His cruel behavior is not something that should be celebrated.

1. In his letter back to Ferdinand and Isabella he ensures them that the new land he has found has an abundance of resources and materials that would be of help and are unique to that specific area. He also informs them that not only are the natives cooperating, but they also think of Columbus as a person from a "celestial race." To close out the letter, he kindly requests more ships for his next voyage.
2. I think he describes Espanola the way he does to convince Ferdinand and Isabella that it is a thriving island with many resources. This way his voyage looks successful. The resources of Espanola that he lists such as spices, gold, and other metal are of interest and value to Columbus, Ferdinand, Isabella, and Portugal.
3.He describes the natives as people who think of Columbus very highly and respect him. He makes it sound like they welcomed him with open arms and allowed him to take over their land and enslave them.
4. I do not think Columbus day should be celebrated because we shouldn't praise someone who "discovered" land and immediately began to kill and enslave much of the native population. If we are celebrating him because he "discovered the Americas," well we know he didn't actually do that. If we are celebrating him because he allegedly treated the natives with respect and kindness and they voluntarily chose to help him take over their land, well once again, that is factually incorrect. While Columbus might have discovered some land and brought back resources that were of value to Portugal, he did not discover the Americas at all, instead he found the Bahamas. While doing so, he managed to take over the land, the native population, and convince people that he did all of that in a non- violent and respectful manner.

1. Columbus sends his letters to Ferdinand and Isabella assuring them that he had found India and that it was everything they hoped it would be. He spoke in ways that in my opinion, over-exaggerated the land he had come upon. He concluded by wishing to send more ships because of the wonderful things he had found.
2. Columbus describes Espanola to be an island of vast riches such as plains and an abundance of rivers. He only describes the positive features about the island and not the negative, which shows that he wants to persuade Ferdinand and Isabella that his venture was a success and not a failure.
3. He describes the population as if they are welcoming him and again only mentions the good. Although he talks about how he had taken some of them by force, he still spoke of them as if they adored him.
4. I do not think that we should celebrate Columbus Day. In the letter regarding the Tainos, Columbus is described as a racist lier, and I find that true. Even though he said that the Tainos welcomed them and showered them with gifts, he still enslaved them and treated them horribly.

1. Columbus writes about the sights that he had come upon throughout his traveling towards what he thought was to be India. He described in detail the looks of the land and all the goods they had in store. He pointed out the actions and lives of the Natives were he had arrived, and emphasizes that he is going to do his best work to make his voyage important and impactful to Ferdinand and Isabella.
2. He describes Espanola in great detail and portrays imagery into ones mind to show how beautiful he thought the land was. He obviously knew the land was full of riches and astounding land. Columbus is so amazed from what he has seen, he said " it surpasses anything that would be believed by one who had not seen it. "
3. In his letter, he hints at the idea that the people are welcoming and open minded to what he has in mind to accomplish. They seem accepting even with their boundaries and differences.
4. After reading this letter, it was easy to get an idea about Columbus day and how it should not be celebrated. Throughout his time discovering, he was not nice and did not treat the natives with respect. It kinda seemed as if Columbus took advantage of these citizens and harmed their lives to the point where some died. So, in our world today, we should have no reason to celebrate this holiday, for it hurt the people who came before in a way that should not be remembered.

1. Columbus informs them of the names of the islands he discovered. He writes about the unique spices and crops they have seen while exploring. Columbus also goes on about their communication barrier, and how he and his men have forcefully taken a few natives to help them learn their language. Overall, he says that the people were very welcoming and showed lots of kindness.
2. He describes Espanola as a beautiful island. He wants to impress Ferdinand and Isabella with an amazing discovery. That is why he named almost all of the resources. Not only does it have mountains, but it also has plains and rivers and so much possibility for human life.
3. Columbus describes the native people as welcoming and kind, but he clearly does not know much about them. They could not communicate with each other so he took a few of them by force. Although Columbus says that they still adore and almost worship him.
4. Celebrating Columbus Day is a very difficult topic. Although he explored a great amount of land and accomplished quite a lot, he slaughtered millions of the natives living on those islands. I don't think Columbus Day should be celebrated because of how much damage he dealt to the indigenous peoples' lives. I think it could be acknowledged and discussed but I don't think Columbus deserves a full holiday.

1. Columbus expresses to the monarchs that he has found India and immediately claimed the land and people. Columbus hoped that the natives would learn the language that columbus, used and start using so it that they may communicate to each other. Columbus also said that the natives believed him to be their holy one and they were telling all of their family and friends to come and watch him. Columbus made it sound like the natives were thrilled to have him and his people there on the island.

2. In Columbus' letter to Ferdinand and Isabella he describes the land as " mountains of great size and beauty" and " very fruitful fields, admirably adapted for tillage,
pasture, and habitation." Columbus made it sound like "india" was so pretty and fruitful so people would want to come or buy the riches from the island.

3. In the beginning of the 3rd paragraph columbus said " I had taken some Indians by force from the first island that I came
to, in order that they might learn our language, and communicate to us." Columbus makes it sound like the people were overly thrilled to have him there.

4. I think Columbus should not be celebrated because Columbus did not discover the Americas. The America's were already inhabited by native people and Columbus arrived and started taking over countries at a time. Another reason we should not celebrate Columbus Day is because he thought he was in India and not America. The only thing Columbus did was open a door for Europeans to come to the America's. If Columbus did not "discover" America then someone else would have discovered it later on. If we celebrate Columbus day then why don't we have a Megallen day. Megallen named the Americas and said that Columbus was not in India.

1. Columbus explains his "great" encounters regarding his journey, and how everything was going the way it was suppose to. He tells about how the people are doing their part in making the experience enjoyable and how he "had taken some Indians by force...in order that they might learn our language, and communicate to us," which was definitely not the case. He used certain phrases to make it seem as though the people loved them and it was smart of the Queen and King to put him in charge of this expedition.
2. In the letter to Isabella and Ferdinand, Columbus described the land to be "very
great size and beauty, vast plains, groves, and very fruitful fields, admirably adapted for tillage,
pasture, and habitation". He used great detail to explain the amazement in which he found, trying to sway the minds of the Queen and King. His specific word choices make it clear that all he stated wasn't the truth.
3. Columbus describes the people as "...when they got rid of the fear they at first
entertained, would come out in throngs, crowding the roads to see us, some bringing food,
others drink, with astonishing affection and kindness." This clearly wasn't all facts, yet Columbus was seeking the approval of the King and Queen, and with a journey as important as this, he had to say anything to make the country support him.
4. After reading the letter regarding the Tainos, I believe Columbus Day should not be celebrated. Although this journey was an embarkment in history, it was not done in a proper manner, and Columbus initially swayed the Queen and King to believe it was all going well. He lied about most of the story, which does not help anyone.

1. Columbuses letters are very extravagant. He describes his voyages as successful and full of many great findings. He tells Isabella and Ferdinand about all the spices, gold and luxuries he promises to them. In the letters he leads them to believe his explorations had been succesful and promising.
2. Columbus describes the land of "Espanola" as beautiful, habitable and having rare things. He says tells Isabella and Ferdinand these things so they can imagine a beautiful paradise. he wants them to see what there founding as profitting for them. He leaves out the natives resistance part so they don't have doubt in his abilities.
3. Columbus describes the indigenous people as compliant and welcoming. He says they "entertained" the sailors. He makes it sound like the natives liked having them there.
4. We should not celebrate Columbus day because he killed millions of indigenous people, didn't find a alternative route Asia and started hundreds of years of slave trade. Columbus coming to the Bahamas only caused millions of natives to die. His ships brought over tons of diseases that the inhabitants weren't used to. Once he got there he imedititly enslaved people and carted the back to Europe in hope to dress them up and parade them in front of monarchs.

Columbus explains to them what all he has discovered, he tells them about all the different parts of land and what he has named it, and what all the land looks like. He then talks about the "Indians" he has found and captured, he explains all the things they could use them for. In the end Columbus talks about all the different resources he has found on the land such as gold.
2. Columbus writes about the island of Espanola making it seem like it is a wonderful pretty looking paradise. He makes the island seem like this because he wants the king and queen to keep investing in him and this voyage. He wants the king and queen to think that he has just found their country a wonderful piece of land.
3. He makes it seem like the natives know nothing and they will doing anything he says. He even points out that they think of him like a God.
4. No, I don't think we should celebrate Columbus day. Columbus was not a hero and he was not the first person to have discovered that land, the Natives were. Columbus was ignorant and got lucky by landing in a place where he hadn't even planned on landing. Columbus was also a horrible leader killing most of his fellow sailors by poor leadership. He also in-slaved many Indians and killed them. Columbus is a not a hero, he was a lucky man that landed on land that was already taken. We, in my opinion, should not celebrate Columbus day.

Columbus describes Espanola in this way to make it sound appealing to everyone and attract them to this island to make him more famous. He wants to draw people in to this new discovery so that they are curious and fund him with more money
3. He tells Ferdinand and Isabella that the indigenous people thought of him as a God in away and that he and his men are from the sky. He makes it seem as if they are lower than him, and that he is higher and greatly respected there.
4. I do not think we should celebrate columbus day. Although he is the reason I am probably here today, there were many nicer and more cooperative ways he could have gone about exploring this new land he found. Since the Native Americans were already there, he could have respected them for that rather than enslaving them, killing them and taking over. Columbus was too violent and racist and I believe that we should not be celebrating a holiday in honor of him for those reasons.

1. The letter from Columbus showed that he believed his Christian faith enabled him to discover many new lands. The people he encountered were able to help him communicate with others on different islands through gestures and signs. With the help of the natives, Columbus was able to procure gold, cotton, spices, and other drugs. The natives that helped him, also thought of him to have "descended from heaven", making it easier for him to earn their trust and acquire goods.
2. Columbus describes Espanola to be an Island with limitless opportunities because of all of its resources. I think he portrayed the Island as being so amazing that Ferdinand and Isabella would not regret founding his journey.
3. He described the indigenous people as being welcoming. Although they were initially fearful, they ultimitaley came out to greet Columbus eagerly bringing food, drink, and kindess. They thought of him as their savior.
4.I believe that Columbus Day should still be celebrated. While I believe it is important to acknowledge the discovery of America, I disagree with the lack of attention payed to the Indians the were already there. I believe you can celebrate both of these parties on Columbus Day. I think that if you could highlight the culture and livelihood of the Indians, while celebrating the importance of Columbus's discovery everyone would be satisfied. Ultimately Columbus Day should celebrate the old and the new. The old, meaning the Indians and the rich culture they posses; and the new, meaning the intriguing ideas that Columbus brought with him.

In the letter, Columbus assures Ferdinand and Isabella that the land he has discovered is good for habitation, and that there are many good resources in the area.
2. I think that he described it like that because Ferdinand and Isabella would see that there are so many amazing resources that they would know that they made a good move in funding Columbus' journey.
3. He describes the Indigenous population as thinking of him as a high power, and that he "descended from heaven". He made it seem like the natives thought of him as their savior and new monarch.
4. In my opinion, we should not celebrate Columbus day. Not only did Columbus not discover the Americas (which already had about 100 million people living there), but he was also responsible for the genocide of the native people living on the islands he landed on. It is offensive to the descendants of those Native people that we celebrate the person that was responsible for the death of their ancestors.

1. In his letters he describes the abundance of resources he had found, and was finding. He also talked about the land, and how lush it seemed to be. He explained how many of the natives, he called "Indians", were now under his control. He also shares that along with the many resources found, he also discovered gold, something of great value to the government.
2. I think he he described the island so dramatically because he wanted the king and queen to be proud of his work and possibly fund more of his trips. He may have also done this because being successful would make him look good.
3. He talks about them very positively, as though he had no trouble taking their land and controlling them. He also makes it sound as though the natives are welcoming, nice, easy people to work with.
4. I do not think we should celebrate Columbus Day because of the way Columbus acted. The way he treated the natives was malicious and wrong, while they treated him with kindness and respect. Columbus also lied about how everything was going to the king and queen ad was not admitting the truth.

1. He talks about the new land, describing the features and how it is compares to Spain. Columbus talks about the natives and how he took them for slaves. Lastly he adds in the a summary of his journey to the island and all the possibilities this new land holds.
2. Columbus describes the island in this way because he wants Ferdinand and Isabella to be proud of him and what he has done. He also wants them to think he has found this amazing new land, not just some place just like Spain.
3. He describes the natives to be intrigued with him and the other voyagers.
4. I think to some extent we should still celebrate Columbus day, because it does mark a very historical event. Maybe we could change the name to not make it all about Columbus, but I still do think the day needs to be recognized.

1) In this letter, Columbus exhaderates the beauty of the Island and states how there are so many mountains, trees and vegetation. He also talks about how the island is has plenty food source and metals. He also states that he captured the indians and how helpful they are. Overall he is exhadering greatness of his Journey.

2) In the second paragraph, Columbus describes the Espona island as a green place with limitless food source, metals and spices. He also states that this would be a great place to live. I believe he described this island so heavenly because he wanted to please Ferdinand and Isabella. I think he wanted them to praise and give him credit.

3) He describes the indians on having great communication with his men

3. He describes the Indigenous population as lower than he is and goes on to say that they will learn to respect their country, language, and faith. He also says that they native people think of him as great or a higher power.
4. There is a controversy over whether people should celebrate Columbus Day or not. My personal opinion is that we should not celebrate this holiday, for in the document it states that there were no legal constraints at the time. So I believe we do not want to shed the example of a time without laws onto our society. I also believe that the harsh behavior Columbus showed to the Native Americans is not how we want to reflect our country or our way of life. Lastly, I do understand that there are two sides to this and I respect both of them, so if people decide to celebrate this holiday or not is their choice.
