The greatest single influence on modern living has been the growth of the internet. The Internet's reach expanded in the 1980s and 1990s to include the IT resources of research institutes, universities, and, later, international institutions, organisations, and private businesses. With over 50,000 sub-networks, 4 million systems, and 70 million users, the Internet experienced tremendous expansion; it was no longer a state-controlled project and had become the largest computer network in the world. (Manuel Castells,2014) It is obvious that such growth, both in terms of numbers and the diversity of tasks that may now be accomplished over the web, has had a significant impact on contemporary life.This essay will first examine the influences on modern life, the reasons why some influences had less of an impact, and ultimately the reasons why the internet had the greatest influence on changes in health, education, working lives, and social structures.
