Bei sehr schneller Bildfolge (wie bei Zeichentrickfilmen, TV, Daumenkino, ...) und geringen Unterschieden, sehen wir die Bewegung flimmerfrei. Für unser Gehirn gibt es dann keinen Unterschied zu echter Bewegung. 

Bei größeren Unterschieden zwischen den Bildern und langsamerer Bildfolge (GIF-Animationen, 2-Bild-Animation, stop motion mit wenigen Bildern, Thaumatrope...) ergänzt unser Gehirn die Bilder damit sie für uns "Sinn machen".

Man bemalte die Vorder- und Hinterseite von Pappscheiben mit unterschiedlichen Motiven – etwa einem Vogel und einem Käfig – und befestigte am Rand Fäden, die ein rasches Drehen der Scheibe ermöglichten. Schon saß der Vogel im Käfig.

Aber die Erfindung ist steinalt, Azéma zeigt es mit der Replik einer Knochenscheibe, die 1868 in Laugerie-Basse gefunden wurde (Antiquity, 86, S. 316). Vorne ist ein lebender Gamsbock, hinten ein toter. In der Mitte ist ein Loch, deshalb wurde der Fund lange als Knopf interpretiert. Aber Azéma hat ihn nachgebaut und durch das Loch einen Faden so geführt, dass er das Ganze in rasche Rotation bringen konnte. Und schon lief der Film: „Die Steinzeitkünstler haben ein optisches Spielzeug erfunden, dessen Prinzip im Thaumatrop wieder kam. Aber auch mini Bewegungen wie das Flattern von Bienenflügeln gehen recht einfach. 

Es ist nicht egal wo die Drehachse der Thaumatrope angebracht wird – auch das ist spannend für Experimente mit den Kindern.
