Parents like the idea of a shelter shed. Some parents like the idea of a sand pit but said that it would hard to maintain and don't like the mess that the parents have to deal with when the kids get home. Instead of a sand pit parents suggested a veggie patch, flower garden or time out area.

If the cost is high must ask council and archdiocese of Melbourne. Things that are made that are approved by professionals. Must have good knowledge and registration. Must meet the standards for building.

Sand pit - hygiene issues, little kids, sand blowing into faces, lots of maintenance cost. Someone must tidy it up and care for it. Dangerous things can be put in the sand pit from strangers.Several cats walk through the school.

Do we need to use a type of material underneath our sandpit ( synthetic grass, rubber, etc.)?

It would be advisable to lay some black plastic, or a weed mat prior to putting the sand in to stop grass, weeds etc growing through the sand.

Most likely no, however you will need to comply with local council requirements and also take into account any easements or areas of the land which do not permit any structures to be built on.This is entirely up to personal choice, however I would use some 300mm treated pine sleepers to form the perimeter of the sandpit.

Yes to obtain a building permit you will need to complete a building permit application form.

Most important thing is to make sure your perimeter treated pine sleeper perimeter is fixed together with the correct screws bolts to ensure it is structurally sound and doesn’t bow out under the pressure of the sand inside.
