This story was very complex. The wife gets news her husband has been killed in an accident and at first she is distraught. Then as she's thinking about how her life will change she gets excited and and is happy to be free of the marriage and free to be on her own. I chose this picture because I think that's how she felt in her marriage - chained together! It seems like a lot of people feel that way in their marriage today. They are unhappy and instead of trying to make it better they are content to stay the same and be miserable, or they find a way out. Sometimes we are not always happy with our decisions, but this is an important one and we should work hard to make it better.

This picture relates to the mother in this story. She is trying to tell her daughter every single thing she should or should not be doing. Obviously, it's for her own good. She wants her to become a proper woman and someone she is proud of. Therefore, she is not "bossy", she just knows what her daughter should be doing. :) I think most mothers can relate to this!

This story seems to emphasize the strong bong woman can have. Even when a relationship may not seem very close, it's almost a natural instinct to protect each other, sometimes to a fault! This poem expresses that. Most women have a need for closeness, for friendship. And they root each other on.

The woman in this story sounds a little cray-cray! But actually so does her husband. It reminds me of a movie where the wife thought she was going crazy, but all along the husband had been poisoning her. In this story she becomes obsessed with this ugly yellow wallpaper and it's affecting her mind...

This is kind of a fun murder mystery. At first it seems like the woman who is thought to have killed her husband was a terrible housewife - since her house was such a mess. But throughout the story you get the impression that she started all these tasks but never finished them for some reason. The women there seems to come to the conclusion that she was interrupted - most likely by her abusive husband. In the end they hide what they feel might be evidence against her so that it can't be used in her trial.

This poem really seems to speak of his experiences in life. This was written at a time when African Americans had much more freedom than their ancestors. It makes me think of tranquility and peacefulness. He wrote about his soul being deep like a river, which is very relatable to a reader. This link is a clip of Langston Hughes reading this poem.

This poem really spoke to me. It's a warning that if we do not pursue and work hard towards our dreams they will not happen! People today it seems expect their dreams to fall in their lap, when in fact, it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice to make dreams a reality. I think this picture says it all!

Miss Moore takes a group of kids from poor families to a very expensive toy store. She wants them to learn the lesson that they do not have to end up like their parents and those around them. They can achieve greater things. She is trying to make them think about their future and inspire them to do whatever they dream. The sign reflects that it's possible for a person to make a conscience choice to live in poverty, because that's what they've always know. But they can also choose to do their best and inspire to be great and succeed.

This picture makes me feel sick. To think these men were subjected to this horrific fight...it's just so wrong. They were put in a boxing ring, blindfolded, and then expected to fight each other. This was all for the entertainment of the white leaders in the community. It's disgusting. These men did what they had to do because they had no other choice. They were completely humiliated.

This picture highlights the shy sister, Maggie, who was burned in a house fire. I'm sure that has a lot to do with her shyness and attachment to her mother. The older sister, Dee, is very entitled and used to getting what she wants. She is shocked when her mother does not let her take the 2 homemade quilts her grandmother made and instead lets Maggie have them. The mothers relationships with her daughters are very different.

The main girl, Laurel, tells the other girls a story about how her father had Mennonite people come paint his porch, he said you could ask them to do anything and they will do it. The phrase "when you've been made to feel bad for so long, you jump at the chance to do it to others" was huge. She realized this was why her father did that. It was the only he'd have a white man on his knees doing something for a black man for free. She realized the world she lived it was mean and bad and that racial tension can come from all directions.

This story highlights that striving after material things is a waste of time. This man spent his whole life working hard to get more and more for this family, when in reality his family only wanted him present in their lives and not feeling neglected by him. His family suffered due to him being a workaholic and only focusing on that. Family life is about being together, being content with material things. Not about the amount of material things we have.
