I often have students work together in pairs creating a dialogue.  One topic I like is using two past verb tenses, the preterit and the imperfect.  Students have to know how to use one versus the other.  Showing me they know how to use them works well in a dialogue where it is the first day back at school after a break and they see a friend for the first time.  They must discuss what they have done over the break.  This assignment would work well with the verb tenses, the holiday vocabulary, and dialogue punctuation from this module.]]> 2019-07-16 13:57:57 UTC https://padlet.com/cmmoran/n4uetqhwuuzk/wish/371318711 Dialogue Assignments amandacolemannn https://padlet.com/cmmoran/n4uetqhwuuzk/wish/371327031 Specifically, with dialogue, I have found that it is extremely beneficial for students if before they begin writing their own dialogue, we look and analyze the use of dialogue in others writings first. For example, I like to pull examples of dialogue from YA novels such as "Hunger Games" or "Maze Runner." We look at not only the dialogue rules using these examples, but also look at its importance to writing. I explain the role of the dialogue and how it can reveal personal thoughts or move the story forward. I have them read their narratives and look for places that would be appropriate to include dialogue. Many students like to create suspense or describe a conflict using dialogue. 
I like the fact that dialogue creates various functions that could enhance the quality of writing. I show a picture of a man hanging onto a rope above the ocean with a huge shark attacking him https://tinyurl.com/y6szsb2s  I tell students to create dialogue of the scene and what happens next. They get to write from the man’s perspective or the shark’s perspective and it results in funny stories. Before they begin, I model my own story and point out how I wrote the dialogue. I project my story on the smartboard with an Elmo and show how to use quotation marks to create dialogue, along with demonstrating suspense and characterization (like the shark thinking how hungry he is and how tasty the human looks or how the man feels beads of perspiration running down his face). Later, we look at student examples on the Elmo. This helps students later when they create fiction pieces or skits. (Also, at the end, we do discuss if the image is fake or not. . . )

It was for students to practice with detail, description and dialogue. Students were paired together and had to choose the story and to change anything about the story (setting,  characters, time period, etc). This was an fun way to practice for the unknown of standardized testing prompts. Students collaborated in pairs to brainstorm. They both wrote their own versions and then peer edited each others' papers. I always explain to students that dialogue has a roll in the story. It should help more the story forward. I then have them look in their writing and take out all of the dialogue. I then ask, is anything from the story missing? Any major details? If the answer is no, they have to work on changing their dialogue to make this happen. I also like to do the same activity where students look at mentor texts and take out the dialogue from a passage. I ask them to make it something basic that they could experience, such as asking their parents to go to a friend's house when they are grounded.
