She was born into slavery, but fled after horrible treatment. She was very inspired by the North Star, and many people around her urged her to make her own autobiography. He claims to have seen visions that he believed were messages from God. He began his rebellion after seeing a solar eclipse, believing that was his sign to begin. Eventually his actions resulted in many deaths and more unnecessary restrictions on enslaved people. A large part of the excerpt centers around a muster and how the author views it as a young child. These seem to happen regularly, but not often. It's mentioned that some slaves thought it was a holiday or celebration, but in reality it was a brutal and unfair search. Insurrection - A violent rebellion or uprising against an oppressive authority.

• "Nat Turner's insurrection broke out; and the news threw our town into great commotion."

Scourge - A whip, historically used as a violent punishment.

• "they were tied up to the public whipping post, and cruelly scourged for telling lies about white men."

Subservience - Your willingness to obey without question.

• "They exulted in such a chance to exercise a little brief authority, and show their subserviency to the slaveholders; not reflecting that the power which trampled on the colored people also kept themselves in poverty, ignorance, and moral degradation."

Consternation - Anxiety or nervous anticipation of something unexpected.

• "tied up to the public whipping post, and cruelly scourged for telling lies about white men. The consternation was universal."

Malediction - A curse ; a phrase thought to bring bad luck or will.

• "the captain turned back, and pronounced a malediction on the house. He said it ought to be burned to the ground, and each of its inmates receive thirty-nine lashes."

Wrath - Extreme, violent anger. 

• "The wrath of the slaveholders was somewhat appeased by the capture of Nat Turner."

This also mentions that she could read. Most enslaved people or poor people of color were not literate. She also includes that some of the letters are requested to be burned, or that she burns some without even reading them. This may insinuate she was working with someone on the outside. This quote is incredibly ironic, because throughout the except people of color have been treated like less than garbage.
