Russell selects to use the idea of the narrator to be revealed as the conscience of the characters; Mickey, Mrs Johnstone and Mrs Lyons. It is as if he is the shadow of the two women, always reminding them of their mistake. The effect of this is to emphasise the extent of their agreement. Throughout the play, he is always present, for example he plays a number of different characters like the milkman and the gynaecologist; the two of these characters both deliver bad news. The use of the milkman is to convey the idea that she cannot pay for the milk for her children; revealing that she is of a lower class due to her lack of money, 'you owe me three pound, seventeen and fourpence.' Russell uses the character of the gynaecologist to notify Mrs Johnstone that she will be having twins, 'you're expecting twins'.

Through the use of the narrator, Russell demonstrates a reminder to both mothers of their mistakes. An example of this is when he taunts Mrs Johnstone with the use of the song 'Shoes Upon the Table'. In the song, the narrator sings 'That you sold a son' which conveys how despite being manipulated into this situation, Mrs Johnstone will be constantly haunted by the decision her entire life because the narrator will continually notify her about her fault as he is always there. Furthermore, Russell uses omission in the song such as 'Y' know he's standing right behind y'' which implies the irony that in later life, Mrs Johnstone could possibly meet her son however it wouldn't occur to her that it was her actual son as she gave him away.

As the narrator is on stage at all time he changes character through out as he starts of as the narrator then he changes to milkman (Joe) which goes to Mrs Johnstone because she cant afford to pay for milk, he then changes to the Gynaecologist to tell the audience that Mrs Johnstone that she is expecting twins, ha changes to the conductor which then kicks Sammy of the school bus on the way to school because he lies about his age 'stop the bus' and is persued by two police men and he changes to the two teachers to show the difference about both classes as they are both suspended for different reasons. This shows that all these characters don't like the Johnstone family as they are always getting in trouble with the police.
