The first confederate flag was called Stars and Bars. The stars represented the seven original states, South Carolina; Mississippi; Florida; Alabama; Georgia; Louisiana and Texas.

The first Union Flag flew over Fort Sumter during that battle had. It had 33 stars which represented every Union State. It was replaced by the 34 star flag on July 4th 1861. The Stripes on every union flag represented the 13 original colonies.

The Confederate Battle Flag was Carried into battle by troops. The 11 stars represented the Confederate States along with Kentucky and Missouri.

The flag was adopted by the Union on February 18, 1865 after West Virginia became a state on June 20, 1863. Nevada joined on October 31st 1864, but their star wasn't added until July 4th 1865 after the confederates surrendered.
