The Theatre of Cruelty, developed by Antonin Artaud, aimed to shock audiences through gesture, image, sound and lighting. The visuals tend to be more artistic/abstract than realistic. This form of theatre was inspired by the surrealism movement where Arthur was a strong believer

This includes appealing to people's emotions (eg. anxiety) through the related visual stimuli rather than in forms of gore and violence.

Antonin Artaud's creative abilities were developed from hospitalisations Artaud had to go through for his mental illnesses.

This influenced him to write several pieces of his best poetry within the span of the 10 years he spent in mental facilities. This also stimulated his attachment to the surreal, which is now a big part of the theatre of cruelty

In Artaud's thesis for cuelty was sensory. He believed that gesture and movement are more powerful than text
