When I was younger, I wanted to grow up and be a teacher, just like every child has at least once dreamed of. I didn’t quite know what type of teacher I wanted to be, but I did know that I wanted to surround myself with a young and potentially challenging environment. As I grew with age, I started meeting and connecting with many different people from different backgrounds. I started to learn more about cultures, religion and other topics which influenced the person I am today. Connecting this to child and youth care, something that I noticed that stuck with me is that a lot of the “issues” these people had could have been avoided if they had a better childhood, or different parents. Everything would lead back to one’s childhood. The way one was raised, the things that they learnt at home, the way they speak, their morals, etc. Practically everything is influenced by their parents and childhood, which ultimately shaped them into who they are today. So, as I grew up and needed to start looking for a career, it was between teaching or doing child and youth work. I ended up choosing child and youth work even though I was set on teaching for almost ten years. This is because I came to the realization that all children deserve to have someone they can lean on or talk to when dealing with serious situations as not everyone has that figure in their life. As a teacher, I wouldn’t be able to be there for a child as much as I could make a difference as a CYW. Both jobs are fulfilling and rewarding, however I am more interested in helping a child mentally. In doing so, this child will be able to grow into an amazing person with the correct help that they need. I also believe that as a child and youth worker it is important to show diversity. I am a brown woman who is visibly muslim, as I wear the hijab. I feel as though it’s important for children to be able to see other cultures as it’s possible that they did not practice their culture at home, or would feel more comfortable seeing someone of their own culture, which can help them open up more and even feel included. Being that woman for these children is very important to me as it will help them feel included, and inclusivity is very important in child and youth work. I would like for a child to feel as comfortable as possible when working with me.

My experiences volunteering at the Children's Aid Society as a peer mentor and teaching in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), and being a group service worker at Geneva have shown me that I have a passion for helping youth and facilitating activities. Looking to the future, I hope to have a role that allows me to work with youth in both one-on-one and group settings. Specifically, I want to become a teacher and a youth worker. I see myself having multiple jobs to practice all the things that I enjoy. I believe that by being a teacher, I can have a positive impact on many young lives while still being able to plan and facilitate activities that engage and inspire my students. Additionally, I want to continue my work as a youth worker, which will allow me to connect with individual youth and make a meaningful difference in their lives. I absolutely love to hear people’s personal stories and perspectives and this is something that I look forward to as a child and youth worker. In doing so, I get the chance to understand and help these children as much as I can. I also really hope to do more research after working with children in the field- more than just my studies at Ryerson but learning more about specific issues while working with these children is something that I strive to do.  I want to be able to do the best job that I possibly can. I also am looking forward to leading and conducting activities to help reinforce skill building and help children develop better life skills. I am drawn to the idea of having multiple jobs that allow me to have a mix of responsibilities. I want to continue being a program instructor for extracurricular activities throughout the TDSB. This will allow me to stay involved in my community, connect with young people, and continue honing my skills as a facilitator and planner. By having a diverse range of responsibilities, I will be able to have a fulfilling career that keeps me engaged and passionate about my work. Ultimately, my goal is to make a positive impact on the lives of youth. By becoming a teacher and youth worker, I will be able to help young people in a variety of ways. To obtain a VSS in the Halton region, there are a few steps that must be taken.

I need to register for the police check: I must make an account with the HPS on this website

After registering myself, I will be directed to a form to fill out. I must give in my personal information, such as my addresses and past addresses, age, etc. 

Once I have completed the form, I will pay for the VSS and receive an email with details on the turnaround time (14 days.)

Since it takes 14 days to come in, it is important that I order it in a timely manner to ensure that I have any documentation on time for my internship.

Therefore, I must hand in and complete my application sometime during the fall, since my internship takes place in the winter.
