Clinical trials are research studies that look at new ways to improve health and avoid, detect, or treat diseases and conditions. Clinical trials are extremely important to help us understand and treat mental illnesses. Without clinical trials, many of the medical treatments and cures we have today wouldn’t exist.
An Update on Open Dialogue: Development and Evaluation of a Social Network Intervention for Severe Mental Illness (ODDESSI)

Principal Investigators: Dr James Osborne and Dr Victoria Clark

The ODDESI trial is the largest randomised controlled trial of Open Dialogue. The study is looking at the Open Dialogue treatment model for patients with severe mental health problems, who experience a crisis and receive ongoing community mental health care. The trial aims to evaluate whether Open Dialogue is more clinically-effective and cost-effective than usual NHS community mental health care, in terms of reducing relapse and improving social networks.

The trial is a national study taking place in 5 different NHS Trusts since 2019. It has recruited participants who have been receiving Open Dialogue care or usual care to compare these services in the NHS. KMPT is the largest recruiting site, with over 200 patients, network members and clinicians. The study is now in the follow up stage and will conclude by the end of 2023, we are in the process of collecting a significant amount of data on a patient’s relapse and recovery over the two years they participated in the trial.

KMPT’s Open Dialogue Team have been a vital part of the research and they are one of the few trial sites that continue to have an established team. The team are passionate about the Open Dialogue model and enthusiastic for it to continue in the as a service in the Trust.

The results of the study are highly anticipated both nationally and internationally with the aim of the trial to transform the current model of health care for patients with major mental health problems.

Links

UCL ODDESSI Trial Webpage

https://www.ucl.ac.uk/pals/research/clinical-educational-and-health-psychology/research-groups/oddessi

Research Papers

Peer Supported Open Dialogue in the National Health Service: Implementing and evaluating a new approach to Mental Health Care

https://bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12888-022-03731-7

Open Dialogue compared to treatment as usual for adults experiencing a mental health crisis: Protocol for the ODDESSI multi-site cluster randomised control trial

Open Dialogue compared to treatment as usual for adults experiencing a mental health crisis: Protocol for the ODDESSI multi-site cluster randomised controlled trial - PubMed (nih.gov)
