AHA MOMENTS

Using the AHA MOMENTS sign post, I was able to find three moments when Pi realizes he is living in fear. For example, when Pi is floating in the ocean with the tiger he soon realized, that he had spent days and/or weeks building a raft for his safety from the bangle tiger, and if it wasn’t for Richard Parker Pi had thought to himself that there would be no reason to live other than trying to overcome Richard Parker and prove his father wrong that animals do have souls and that they can live at peace with one another, so Pi’s real journey began. Pi had many AHA MOMENTS like this throughout the story, another example would be when Pi and Richard Parker had floated into an island, they both were excited to be on land but it was not home. Pi still was living in fear of death, so he had gathered some supplies and set back off too sea. He thought to himself that if he stayed on the island he will die on the island and that was not what he wanted to do. Finally, Pi had one more realization when he abruptly drifted upon a Mexican shore line, Richard parker had left the boat and ran into the jungle never to return, when Pi realized this he lost his will to live, he laid face down in the sand ready to meet one of the many gods he had believed in during his childhood. In reading Life of Pi I have one question for the author, everyone in his story lives in fear, yet we are happy how does living in fear change the way you write your stories? I found that these were the most significant sign posts in the book because it was when Pi has the option to just stop, finish his journey, and just end the book. In saying this it was important for the author to write the story this way because we all go through tough times in our lives, we just have to remember there is always something to live for, and the next story may be written about you.

Matthew Brown

Ms. Scherer

ENG4U

2019-01-14

Life of Pi Analyzed Through a Feminist Lens

“You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it.” Yann Martel. In the story Life of Pi, you follow the life of the Patel family. Throughout the story you see that Pi’s father has all authority in the household, he makes all the decisions and that’s final. The Life of Pi by Yann Martel can be view through a feminist lens based on Pi’s mother having no say, and Pi’s father making all the decisions.

The Life of Pi is all about Pi Patel, but this story would have been completely different if Pi’s mother had made decisions. Pi followed many religions as a curious young kid, growing up with many different religions around him. Pi followed three religions Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam growing up Pi’s mother supported him, she felt it would help him to grow and learn about the world. Pi’s father immediately put an end to the religions, he told Pi to choose a religion and stick with it, you cannot have more than one god, “Believe in everything at the same time is the same as not believing in anything at all” Satosh Patel. Pi’s mother was then overthrown by the father she had no say, she couldn’t support her own son. Throughout this story you can see that Pi’s mother continually has no say in decisions as Pi’s father wants to start a new life in Canada, Pi’s mother disagree she was comfortable in India and she felt there was no need to move as did Pi.
