Gatsby Ch. 5 by Julie Puls

Think of a time when you dreamed of getting something (an object, an award, a job, even a boyfriend/girlfriend). How can the attainment of the goal be less satisfying than the pursuit of the goal? Is it worth it in the end?

Gatsby finally met with Daisy, yet was afraid to talk to her at first. Why?

At first the goal is satisfying until you are so used to it. Some point you get to look back and see how you reached your goal and realize if it was worth it or not. How you reached it depends on whether if it was worth it or not. Gatsby had a goal to be what Daisy needed. He wanted to meet her and show her that he had gotten it and to see if it was worth doing what he did to meet her needs.

You look forward to achieving the goal, so once to reach it you don't really know what to do aftereards. Sometimes you have higher expectations and it is a let down when things don't go exactly as you planned. I think Gatsby had looked forward to seeing Daisy again that it was only a dream to him, he never actually expected to see her, and when he did he didn't know what to say. He lost his bravodo. You lose your purpose

The attainment of the goal can be less satisfying because when you want something, you work to pursue it and once you have received the thing that was wanted you don't know what to do with the rest of the built up energy you had.

I suppose getting a job was a big goal of mine. I wouldn't say I dreamed of it. Naifeh's isn't really a dream job. Working there is definitely less satisfying than getting the job. Yeah I got it, woo hoo, but now I actually have to work. Work isn't fun. It's work. Is it worth it? I mean, yeah, I guess so. I earn money; that's nice. I think anticipation is dangerous. You build something up in your mind and it inevitably falls short of your expectations.

Trying to get a job was very hard and I felt like the process was very long and stressful. I wanted to give up and stop trying after I applied at 9 places, when I finally received a phone call saying I got the job I realized it was all worth it in the end because it's what I've been striving to achieve for a long time. Gatsby was probably afraid to talk to Daisy at first because he had higher expectations for that point of time than what actually happened between the two.

I have built things up in my head many times, and have been disappointed before, but that doesn't mean it wasn't worth it. I would do the exact same things, even if it didn't end well. I relate a lot to Gatsby in the idea that he was afraid to talk to Daisy, because I also have been in the situation where I was afraid to talk to the girl I like after building it up, but like Gatsby, I realised that I should talk to her anyway because I might not get this chance again

Sometimes, one cannot receive things as they wish. Instead they either have to wait, or keep trying. This can make one weary, and lose interest easily. The trials, one may face, should be worth the goal in the end. However, people often give up too quickly. I believe, Gatsby was just too nervous to talk to Daisy. After all, there were many years, where they didn't speak. Gatsby probably couldn't find the right words to express how he felt.

When you are working to get something, you feel as though you have a purpose and once you achieve your goal, you have nothing to work for.
