Noah Warner

Amy Doty

Composition 1

My story of writing isn't a very interesting one. I probably started writing in 2nd or 3rd grade at Meadowlane Elementary school here in Lincoln. The first real paper I remember that I had to write was in 3rd grade. We had to write about what we wanted to be when we grew up. I wrote about how I wanted to be an astronaut. I got an A on that paper. I was so excited because it was the first big paper that I had written. A negative memory that I have from my writing career was from not that long ago. It was in my 10th grade English class at Lincoln East high school. We had to write a 3 page essay on a book we read called "Death of a Salesman". I had read the book but when it came to the essay questions, I drew a blank. I came up with enough writing for the paper but it was very poorly written. I got a C on that paper. Luckily, my teacher helped me after class one day and I got a chance to revise it. I got that paper up to a B. We never had to write very many papers in high school and that is probably one of the reasons that writing is definitely not a strong suit of mine.

What did I discover about myself as a writer? Well that i'm not a very good one. That's okay though, that is why I am in composition class. To strengthen my writing skills for my future. I don't find writing very fun and that is probably a big factor in why my writing skills are lower. I tend to get writers block super easy when I write.

What made my best writing experience my best one? It was probably my third grade essay on what I wanted to be when I grew up. I had fun writing that essay. I was super into the fact that I wanted to be an astronaut so that's why I was able to write it so easy. If I'm writing about something that I am really into than I dont get writers block so easily.

Who are my audiences for my paper or essays? It has always been my teachers. I have never written an essay or paper for someone else to read. Also my peers in that class would also read and revise my essay, as I would do the same for them.

Noah Warner
Amy Doty
Comp 1
November 8, 2018
For this assignment, we had to take a stance on a social issue of our choice. The topic that I chose was mental health. I chose that topic over some of the other ones because it is a topic that is close to me. I had a friend form culvers where I work commit suicide this last spring. When I first started chose this topic, I did not know how i was going to use this as my stance. I figured out that I would bring the government into play. My final thesis was that the government should increase the awareness about mental illnesses and suicide prevention and provide more clinics, because the public doesn’t have enough knowledge about the topic and there is not enough clinics in the area to help the people in need.

I did not really have a specific writing process. I just sat down and banges out ideas on to my essay. Then I went through it and took out the things that I did not think were needed. I think that that process was effective for me but i'm not sure how it would work for other people. I think that it worked for me because I had all the ideas on paper so all I had to do was edit my paper. I turned it into smart thinking to get my revisions. I had many things to fix in my essay such as spelling and grammar.

My best aspect of my essay is definitely my personal example. It was a strong example because I experienced it first hand and that it was only 6 months ago. Other than that example, the other best part of this essay is that I came up with enough content for it. Writing has always been the worst for me. I'm definitely getting better at it so that is a step in the right direction.

One thing that I need to do better on my next paper is that I need to slow down and double check my paper before I turn it in. There were many spelling and grammar mistakes that I could have avoided if I were to spend more time re-reading my paper.

The purpose of this essay was to take a stance on a topic that you care about. My primary audience would be you and my classmates.
