Bissinger talks about the Watermelon Feed held at Permian in August as a preseason celebration. He then chronicles the history of Permian football. Bissinger then discusses the pressure Gaines is constantly under because of how devoted the Permian fans are. High school football is used as a distraction for the once thriving community of Odessa which has gone into a slump when the second boom ended.

“The grand dukes of Permian, men in their fifties and sixties, who had
become as dependent on the Panthers as they were their jobs and children
and wives and treated the memory of each game as a crystal prism that
looked more beautiful and intricate every time it was lifted to the light,
were there in full force, of course.” (pg. 40)
This shows that playing Permian football was like a rite of passage to be
a part of the former player fan base, one where former players could
recount their memories and treat them like valuable possessions. Old players are stuck in their glory days and relive them each season.

Things Fall Apart

Okonkwo gets his sense of manhood and pride from his days as a great wrestler. The event is still a large part of his life and he always watches it. His faithfulness to the past is what leads to his conflict with the colonizers and ultimately makes him commit suicide.

Slaughterhouse Five

Billy Pilgrim is stuck in the past, literally reliving the events of the war much like the old Permian players are stuck rooting for their team. Both pasts are what the characters hang onto.

The Color Purple

Instead of cling to her past, Celie looks toward the future. She doesn't hold her past life with her father or the definitions given by Mr.___ as truth. Instead of where she has been she focuses on where she is going and is successful in gaining her freedom.

Conclusion

The Permian Basin uses old fame and nostalgia during the football season to distract from poor economy and education. While Okonkwo and Billy are stuck in the past and have conflict, Celie looks towards the future and has success. This shows that it is better to focus on the future than the past.

While the first part of the Passion Project was about a problem in the world, the second was about fixing it. If we only focused on the past like Permian fans we would have no solutions. Because we looked forward towards a better tomorrow we were able to create action plans, some of which were successful for the world and others that improved ourselves.
