A window in this short story is the main character's family adopting a 4 year old child. This is a window to me because I don't know what it is like to have a sibling. I learned through the main character's experience that though Leena sometimes got into fights with her little brother, in the end, she still loves him. Her brother causes a lot of mischief in the house and almost ruins her birthday party, but she makes the decision to allow Hakeem to join them as well and doesn't let her friends say bad things about him for ruining the party. Hakeem is very happy that he gets to be with his big sister. The smile on his face makes Leena happy as well. After all, he is her brother.

Bob held the button for 12 minutes(the time it takes to get to the mortal world from Tartarus) and Damasen held off Tartarus. He knew Tartarus and his moves because after all, he is his son.

In this section of dialogue, Bob tells Percy and Annabeth that this would be one of the many sacrifices they had to make in order to defeat Gaea. For them to get out alive, Bob tells them that he and Damasen must stay behind, sacrificing their only chance to get back to the mortal world. The reader learns that there definitely will be more situations where sacrifices have to be made for the greater good. This advances the plot as it looks ahead to what will happen in the future, almost like foreshadowing bad times are coming. Percy, Annabeth, and their friends must take immediate action in order to stop Gaea from rising, and save the world.

The author is using hyperbole in this piece of text. I know this because he states that the mere lighting of Nike's wings is bright enough to power an entire city, which is definitely an exaggeration. The author uses this phrase to show how bright Nike's wings are. It helps me picture what the character must have been seeing(or feeling). The hyperbole acts as a scale for the reader to picture the scene taking place.

They are discussing the fate of the world, and what will happen to it if the demigods are too late to stop Gaea from rising. Annabeth especially is really scared because ever since she got back from Tartarus, she couldn't erase that torturous memory. Piper, even though she is scared herself, comforts Annabeth.

Piper and Reyna were having a conversation about one of Reyna's problems. Throughout the series, from when Reyna was first introduced till now, she had been a strong-willed, independent young woman. She never confided with anyone about her worries. When she tells Piper about the thing that was constantly bringing her down, Piper acts as any good friend would, and makes Reyna feel better. This section of dialogue also reveals information about Piper' personality, and shows that she is a loving, good-hearted person who motivates and brings out the best in everyone. The impact this has on the reader is learning about character development. At first, Piper was shown as a girl who wasn't even confident in herself. Now, she has stepped up to help others gain that confidence, even the people that are strong themselves.

A mirror I came across while reading today was when Terry's dad was describing what it was like during the Vietnam war. Feeling hopeless, frightened to death, all alone... This event is what changed his dad forever. This is a mirror because I had a great grandfather who was a freedom fighter in the Indian independence movement. My family has preserved his diary entries, and I read them whenever I get the time. Similar to the story, it also described how dangerous the independence movement was, and the major events that took place.

Here, the author is using a simile. I know this because he is comparing Terry's father's short breaths to the pants of a hurt animal. Another clue that helped me figure this out was the keyword "like" being used. I think the author included this to add description, so that the reader could clearly picture what was going on in the scene, and how his dad was acting. The comparison helps visualize what was really happening. The impact this has on the reader is learning about the character's feelings. Terry is embarrassed by his father because he is acting out in public. He is ashamed because everyone was staring, some even laughing.

It means that he could never forget that incident. It would always be on his mind, like a heavy weight in his chest. The connotation of this phrase is negative, because Terry is embarrassed and ashamed of the incident.

The author used this phrase because it helps the reader learn how the character was feeling, and emphasize this important incident in the story. The whole story is about his father having relapses, and how it affects Terry. So, to start the story, the author stated the problem, and everything that comes after it relates. The effect that this has on the reader is learning about the main conflict early in the story. It also helps the readers understand the upcoming events in the story.

One mirror I came across while reading today was when Alex was called as one of the Unwanteds. Kids who fell under this group would be escorted to a death camp where they would be executed because they were not useful for the welfare of Quill. This is a mirror(not in the exact way) because there have been times when I have felt like an "unwanted" and useful for virtually nothing. This scene reminded me of those times, so I can already say I'm connecting a lot with the main character.

One mirror I came across while reading today was when Samheed apologizes to Alex for punching him in the eye. I was very surprised this happened, because from what the book is suggesting, I thought Samheed was a selfish, stuck-up jerk. This is a mirror scene because the same exact event has happened in my life. I got super mad once, and punched this boy in the stomach. After thinking about it, I felt bad and apologized. Though he forgave me, we were always careful around each other.

Another mirror I came across while reading today was when Meghan's instructor told her that she was ready for Magical Warrior Training. If a student is ready for Training, it means that they've been doing exceptionally well in their classes. Meghan is the first one to get an approval, though she doesn't let this go to her head. This is a mirror scene because a similar event has happened in my life. My 3rd grade teacher asked to meet me alone one day, when she told me that I was ready for advanced math classes. At the time, I was the only one approved, but like Meghan, I didn't let that go to my head.

One mirror I came across while reading today was when Lani boldly faced Sean when he asked if she was the governor's daughter. Lani started to influence other kdis around her, and her father(as governer) didn't like that, so he voted for her to become an Unwanted. In reality, it's kind of a shame for a father to nominate their own child to be executed, but Lani doesn't seem to think much of this. The scene is a mirror because there was one such time when someone looked at me with arrogance, which I later found out was because I was Indian. I stood up to that person and showed him that I was just like any other person, and perfectly capable of doing normal things.

The author is using a simile here. I know this because he is comparing the sensation felt by Alex to how someone would react when they feel energy coursing through them(a shuddering feeling). This is effective because it shows how tense Alex is because he is about to get Purged(eliminated). By including this scene, the author helps the reader feel what Alex is feeling.

The author is using a metaphor here. I know this because his literally saying that the group of Unwanteds are pigs. The actual meaning of this phrase is that the Unwanteds act dumb, just like pigs in a sty. This is effective because it shows the reader the prejudice held against the Unwanteds just because they weren't smart. But they were really creative. Which is why the government of Quill considered them a threat.

The author is using an idiom here. I know this because the phrase cannot be taken literally, as we all know it's impossible to actually "hang on" to words. The real meaning is that the children were listening to Mr.Today very intently. This is effective because the reader can understand how grateful the children were to be saved from Elimination, which is why they want to heed anything that Mr.Today tells them to do.
