He has a distinctive compositional style, utilizing techniques such as negative harmony, reharmonization and layering. Collier's harmony and his ability to modulate to harmonically distant keys inspire me to deepen my knowledge of music theory.

Collier has cited Stevie Wonder as a "major" influence on his music (Hulm, 2023), enabling him to experiment with chromaticism alongside jazz harmonic movements. Wonder's song "Sir Duke" (1977) substitutes a chord with a non-diatonic one, resulting in a chromatic bassline. Such compositional choices inspire Collier to use intricate harmony and extend beyond typical diatonic chord progressions.

Bernard Hermann is a film composer known for his exceptional orchestral writing and mastery of writing for strings. Giacchino says Hermann's work in The Twilight Zone in 1959 was a "massive inspiration" to him (Los Angeles Times, 2010). Hermann's idiomatic writing and orchestral layering undoubtedly influenced Giacchino's film scores.

Giacchino states that Debussy is one of his creative influences when writing music (Yellowbrick, 2023). Debussy's expressive diatonic and chromatic harmonies inspired Giacchino to write emotionally compelling music. The impressionist composer envisioned music that revolved around "the most "human" expression of lived experience". (Whittall, A. (2011). Debussy's expressive compositional influences are much evident in Giacchino's film scores.

Giacchino's contemporary classical-styled pieces are also reminiscent of Beethoven's symphonic writing (Yellowbrick, 2023). Beethoven's thematic writing significantly influenced Giacchino to write memorable pieces. Beethoven's compositional style defied classical-era rules to convey complex emotions (March, D. 2013), influencing Giacchino to compose with techniques that made classical music effective in expressing emotions.

With Hancock's teachings, Collier understood the importance of life experience in shaping his harmonic choices (WIRED, 2018). Hancock may have encouraged Collier to view music theory as a guide rather than a limiting framework, allowing Collier to innovate from tradition.
