I am aware of the concept of Eastern musicals, which are not globally recognized, as there is no such thing as a universally known "Eastern musical." It’s a term I have just coined to describe what is known as the Rahbani theater. The Rahbanis are the Rahbani family, who contributed to and developed Arabic musical theater alongside many prominent singers, most notably Fairuz, Wadih El Safi, Nasri Shamseddine, and Melhem Barakat.

I have no idea if musical theater existed before the Rahbanis, and I know almost nothing about global musical theater.

I had the experience of acting, singing, dancing, and moving a lot in a musical in Damascus, Syria, called A Tale from the East, which was my first and only experience participating in a musical. This performance took place at the Opera House in Damascus in 2023. Because of this participation, I was inspired by my supervising professors at the Higher Institute of Music, who advised me to study and understand more about different types of performance in music. After several experiences as a singer and one where I was a guest with my colleagues alongside the first all-female orchestra in the Arab world, called Mari Orchestra, in a concert titled My City, my professors in the acting and music departments praised the great potential I have, which I am here to further explore. Some famous actors in Syrian drama even thought I was a graduate of the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts as an actor, but the truth is, I am a graduate of the Higher Institute of Music as an Eastern sing

Because the theater is the only place where a person must be either truthful and believe in every word and letter they speak, carrying the message of any performance, or not. Through honesty, the performer either delivers their message with love and earns their share of success, or they practice deceit on themselves and others by not fully believing in what they are doing, which leads to their failure and inability to connect with the audience.

The theater is the only place in the world where we can be honest, bold, and express ourselves freely through our art without facing clear annoyance or oppression

I know that there are many types of different musicals in this world. For example there are musical animation movies, classical musicals, modern musicals and a lot of different genres. I am more familiar with the “newer” musicals from after 1950. I know a lot of songs from musicals and a lot of plots but I don’t really know much about their origin or history, which is why I am looking forward to learning a lot more!

I personally think that theatre touches a place in people’s hearts that nothing else can reach. It evokes emotions people have never felt before and makes them think about things they’ve never thought of before. When I first saw a musical performance I left the theatre with a sense of enrichment and thoughtfulness. I remember thinking: “I want to be able to touch people this deeply.“ Theatre in my opinion has an impact that not much else does and I would love to be part of making a difference through performance like in the theatre.

I would like to achieve this through my own personal journey and I think this degree will help me gain more perspective and experience so I can reflect better on myself and treat my peers well. I don’t have that much knowledge about the musical theatre and specially the history of it , but i’m pretty sure that when there’s a musical show , every single department is involved specially the “production arts” because the technicals takes a very big part of those shows. A mixture between everything, acting , singing, lighting, sounds , movement . And that’s why i think it’s the “All ROUND ART” which make it very special and unique.

If we think normally, of course, the pineapple doesn’t belong to the pizza , but if you try it, your opinion will completely change, I tried pizza with pineapple before and it was perfect mix, may be it’s like the salted caramel not all people like it but for me it’s perfect mix also.

I'm not too aware of the history behind musical theatre, but I do enjoy a good musical. I haven't watched that many, but I've enjoyed all the ones that I have watched so far. I've also tend to notice that I enjoy the production side of things on musicals a lot more than the typical non-musical production.

I'm actually quite interested in learning a lot. Prior to our class, I never gave musicals much thought, and hence kinda just assumed that all musicals kinda just perform and act in one particular way. Only after learning about that one, all rock musical, did it click in my head that there's definitely different genres/styles within musical theatre, and so i'm interested in learning the differences between each of them and their similarities.

It's just a passion thats always had a place in my heart. It's not something that I can explain, or something that I can say I grew into loving as I guess I've always enjoyed it from the start. I think I've loved it from the very beginning, but I've definitely learned to love new things as I learned about them over the years. I did have some very amazing middle/high school teachers who understood that passion of mine and helped me grow into wanting to be involved in production arts and theatre as a whole as my future.

Actually, I don’t know that much about it, but I do know that it’s a type of theatrical show consist of all the primary factors that contribute into what is called a theatrical play.

For example, There must be a script, director, actors and actresses, producers etc.

However, I assume that the main character in musical theaters is always the singer not the actor.

I have the interest to learn anythings that will make me a better person , anything will make me feel the people and the space around me and dig deeper to the meanings not the shapes .

In my point of view i don’t find anything that gives you the same feeling as watching “Theatre “ , seeing a person that you know in real life characterise a whole new character and still believe them! and being that person that characterises who can really feel emotions of someone else who maybe doesn’t even exist at all , is a very different experience that i’m lucky i can have it one day.
