 Historically used to mark criminals in Japan, tattoos, particularly those with criminal connotations, are often looked at with disdain by the every-day citizen. The Yakuza’s utilization of these tattoos helps highlight and reinforce their deviance from Japan’s values, rules, and norms. 

 

With deeply engrained social standards upheld by a largely ethnically homogenous population, one can imagine the connection between tattoos and criminality in Japan will take some time to fully sever. 

The leather vest, the “face-Melter 100” helmet and the chopper (with a 500db exhaust that’s thunderous enough to level homes and places pedestrians at risk of spontaneous combustion), are the hallmarks of the ‘motorcycle club look’. 

This look, made popular by criminals, seeks to separate the wearer from regular citizens. It denotes membership to an organization that operates against the grain of society. They do not abide by laws, much less societal rules. 

This distinctive look has been coopted by regular, law-abiding citizens to evoke some sense of rebelliousness and deviance. While harmless in most cases, glorifying gang-related clothing is potentially problematic.
