I loved it and find it very relevant to the students I teach since we have a Sudanese population in Guymon. The story shows the importance of tradition and of keeping tradition even when going to a new place - keeping his name. It explains the history of why many people come to America as refugees without being graphic. It shows the struggle many kids have when they have a foreign name and a possible solution to help others in pronouncing it. Loved this book! It was a very positive message to children that beauty lies within your actions and talents, not looks. It was engaging with continued sentences on the following pages. It also acknowledges differences and uniqueness, and has a good representation of different cultures/ values. It also accurately reflects current socio-cultural attitudes, but in a playful way that remains positive and whimsical throughout the whole story.

SIDE NOTE: Onomatopoeias always stick out to me because I learned to spell that word in the 4th grade for the spelling bee. Then they told me to spell "refrigerator" and I misspelled it. I feel like I always accidentally find ways to plug that into conversations! :)

When I teach onomatopoeias I usually use the book "Gerald McBoingboing", but this one will me much better!! Not only will the kids love it because it is such an engaging story, but I can turn it into a cultural experience for my class as well. 

This book not only shines a light on the hispanic culture, but on girls as "superheroes". It is respectful of hispanic culture and shows a beautiful relationship between Lucia and her Abuela who she calls "Abu". I love how the characters were from different ethnic backgrounds. Some of the characters had physical disabilities and many different body types were represented. I appreciate how the author and illustrator broke stereotypes of girls...they showed them being messy, having fun, doing things that used to be reserved for boys (they were interested in science and building things). Mia is a pretty little black girl. Mia is happy with who she is, she is a very happy girl. Mia has a lot of friends and she describes her friends and what they look like. Mia tells of her friends she does not just tell you their names she describes them by using different colors such as sweet mocha, has skin like taffy. The author gives great details of how each girl looks and act and it is ok to look different. It's not a picture book or lower elementary book. It's a 250 page chapter book designed for upper elementary to JH students but I got to teach it once and it really resonated with a group of students who needed a lot of literary support but they saw themselves in the story. I manage the whole Reading Remediation (aka Title I library) and I personally have only gotten to teach a few of the books we have as class sets/small group sets and this book ranked number two in engagement after Le Petit Prince. The little prince is an awesome book for teaching so many themes of humanity, but Esperanza Rising does so much within a cultural context my students understand. Many of their parents are immigrants and the mixture of english and spanish in the text appeals to them.
