Conventions of a Pop Video

A main convention of a pop music video is the use of very bright, vibrant colours. This is to often match the beat of the song as pop song are normally very upbeat and are seen as 'party' songs to play in clubs and at festivals. This is to reach a younger target audience that would be expected to be at these settings. For example, in Little Mix's music video for 'Power', from the start of the video the audience is introduced to very bright and vivid colours which reflects the upbeat and high-tempo beat of the song. A pop music video also uses a lot of close-ups heavily throughout the video as a way of promoting the artist. By using close-ups consistently, it firstly introduces the artist to the audience and by repetitively using close-ups, the audience familiarises themselves with the artist.

How Artists are Represented

Artists, particularly females are often represented in a sexual way (voyeurism) and are often dressed in provocative clothing. This again is to reach their specific younger target audience. This also links to Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze in which women are represented as sexual objects for the enjoyment of men and they lack importance on screen if there is also a male on screen with them. As viewers we are forced into the perspective of a heterosexual man for the performance. For example, in Rihanna's music video 'Work', despite being the main artist she is seen as the sexual object out of the two as she dresses and dances provocatively throughout the video for the enjoyment of the male artist on screen with her.

Pop music videos are also very performance-based. It is unusual to find a strong narrative in a pop music video as the visuals usually focus solely on the performance of the artist. If there is a narrative it usually surrounds the artist performing or features the artist as the main character in the narrative.
