The Winters Tale Synopsis

To get a better understanding of our theme, we analysed the synopsis, underlining the different characters, key plot points and the positive and negative moments of the play. Whilst I annotated, I kept in mind the descriptions of the two kingdoms and kings as well as what bought the two kingdoms together (which in my opinion, was the emerald. If Perdita wasn't wearing the emerald necklace, Polixenes wouldnt have realised she was the lost princess meaning the two kingdoms would not reunite)

After the analysis of the synopsis, we were given three prompts to create either a set design or marketing design for. Before we chose, we created a mind map and wrote down anything that related to the prompt at hand, keeping in mind how I could relate it to the play for later. Whilst creating this mind map, i thought about Ancient Greece specifically because of hermoine coming back to life after she was a statue, it seemed very reminiscent of greek mythology (as well as the rest of the story). However, i preferred the Juxtaposition prompt more.

Whilst creating this mind map, I had the two kings in mind and how they were described in the synopsis. The King of Sicilia, Leontes is said to be a person that “grows in threatening coolness and darkness”. Whilst the King of Bohemia, Polixenes is a “pastoral idyll of lyricism and sun saturated colours”. From these descriptions i immediately had the idea of communicating how these Kings through colour contrast. (Leontes=blues, purples, cool colours.) (Polixenes= oranges, yellows, warm colours) This is the Prompt i chose after i created the three mindmaps.

Juxtaposition Moodboard

After choosing my prompt "Juxtaposition", I kept the kings description in mind when creating a moodpboard with pictures I found online. I split the moodboard in two: one side having the word "good" and the other "bad" to represent the Kings. I also thought about the emerald necklace and how it affected the two kingdoms relationship for the better. In the middle, there's a fusion between blue and yellow to represent how both kings aren't inherently good or evil. in some points of the story, they are just as bad as each other.

During the making of the mood board, the idea of a Solitaire card came to mind as I thought about the original design technically has two kings. The good side has the king of hearts and the bad side has the "reverse" king of spades. Through its composition, I thought about how I could use it to further portray the two kings stories in a subtle way.

Poster design task (Marketing design)

For a better understanding of my target audience, I looked at the different posters and advertisements made for plays/musicals. I found that the majority of posters that were aimed towards young people (or people of all ages) had very few colours with fairly simple designs. That would be something id have to keep in mind ind as I had to ensure my poster appealed to 14-19 year olds.

With my first initial idea, i thought more about the shape and line rather than the idea i had. By using softer lines and a circular background for King Polixenes, it adds to the soft description that is given to him without needing to use colour. Similarly, i created more sharper and jagged lines to portray King Leontes like his description does. I liked the way they were portrayed in this idea, however, there is no obvious way to show their similarity as kings which i thought to be a key idea to include going forward.

Before I started my initial sketches for my final outcome, I created a mood board for inspiration. A feature i especially liked was the diamond shaped halos that some of the artworks had, i thought i could incorporate the kings card symbols in a similar way. I also included tarot cards into the mood board as they have interesting compositions and boarders to their cards. Additionally, it is believed that if you pull a card from a tarot deck in reverse, the card becomes a different meaning to its original. I thought that would be an interesting way of displaying the two kings.

Whilst i sketched these ideas, i had both the kings, the emerald and Hermoine as a statue in mind. I wasnt too sure if i could incorporate the statue, the emerald and Perdita into my Directors vision but i sketched them nonetheless. I did like their compositions but i couldnt think of a Juxtaposition in the play that included them besides the emerald, so i decided to stick to the Kings. Using the inspiration from my mood-board, i sketched an idea where one of the kings (Leontes would suit the sketch more) had a veil coming from his crown covering his eyes to symbolise how he was blinded by hate as portrayed in the play. This would be something id consider as i continued to sketch ideas

Using Adobe Illustrator, i took the aspects of my last ideas that i liked (like the veil and statue) to create newer or “cleaner” looking sketches. I preferred the second one the most as i was inspired to experiment with the playing card idea i had.

To try something different, I used Adobe Illustrator to create a different way to display juxtaposition. The snake represents the hatred and betrayal that built up between the characters, whilst the mouse represents the purity, Perdita. As i developed my ideas, i wanted to keep that representation within my ideas and final outcome.

Using the reference tool i found, i posed it in different ways to find which two i preferred the most which where the ones with the arrows underneath them. I felt like each of the communicated the personalities of the kings how i saw them.

After sketching different head perspectives, i practiced drawing different variations of crowns so they would become easier to draw as well as having a good reference to pick aspects from when it came to the final outcome. I took inspiration from the veil initial sketch as well as imaged online.

With this card, i sketches out the card with a HB pencil before going over it with coloured pencils. I tried to incorporate the sharper and bolder lines when colouring in the sketch. Whilst making the piece I enjoyed the colouring process as well as creating bold and hatched lines to create the two kings like I did in the previous card. I also liked the idea of having the emerald in the centre of the card as it would apply the significance that the necklace had in the story. However, I felt that the kings could be drawn to express a subtle trait in their personalities.

After experimenting with different facing positions as well as the crowns, i made a mood board as inspiration before i started experimenting with the kings layout. This also meant that i could experiment more with where the kings were facing as well as the colour scheme. I wanted to make my final outcome in a similar composition as a playing card (specifically the kings) because on every card, there's two of the same number and suit but in reverse. Because the Kings share similar traits yet are different, I wanted communicate that through the composition. The reason I chose the King of hearts and King of Spades specifically was because they look similar when flipped but are slightly different as well as their suit colour.

As well as a mood board, I did a small amount of research on each card.

King of Spades- Is usually depicted as a bearded, royal figure with a crown and yields a sword. (in traditional decks) In turn, is associated with power and authority especially in card games such as Bridge and Spades where the card is considered the most powerful out of the deck.

King of Hearts- Considered the highest ranking card in the suit and is often associated with love, deep emotions and empathy. A symbol of "balanced' power and teaches the importance of making decision with both heart and head.

Depicted as handsome, regal figure with a sword surrounded by flowers and often wilds Heavy influence and significant power.

Through this research I believed both characters have these qualities as well as a small amount of each others which I wanted to express my both Kings having accent colours of each other.

The first card I made with coloured pencils, using different marking making techniques to create the silhouettes of each king as well as their crown. Using my mood board of the playing cards as inspiration, I created a swirling motion with different hues of yellow to make King Politeness to give him a softer look. Whilst, with King Leontes I used jagged lines and hatching to create a harsher silhouette. I wanted to capture their descriptions through colour and line: I believe I achieved that. An area for improvement would be to change the spade and heart symbols into a different colour (maybe to a red) as I didn't like how strong it came off. As much as I liked the card, I wanted a more obvious depiction of the kings.

Out of three cards, this one was my favourite composition as I could start developing my outcome with the vision I had in Adobe illustrator rather than using traditional mediums. The card would look better coloured and with more detail but I had planned to do that in illustrator. Again, I didn't like the backgrounds I had given the kings which I would have to develop later on.

This was my first attempt at creating King Polixenes in Adobe Illustrator. Because of the printer I used, the illustration came out darker and more orange than I intended it to be. For my final outcome I would lighten the values of both kings slightly and use a different printer to avoid this mistake again. However, I did like the expression on his face; he looks like he's looking down upon the viewer which was the impression I wanted him to have. I also liked his crown as it was simple and (in my opinion) fit his personality. When I thought more about the synopsis, I thought about how he was described in an almost clean and "pure" way which is why I thought a simple crown would suit him best. Although, I think getting rid of the lifework would make the piece look more bright

This was my second attempt at creating Polixenes on Adobe Illustrator. Using the first attempt, I got rid of the outlines, lightened the hues and added a background. I definitely think this was an improvement of the last as he looks brighter and the shading on his skin is bold and clear; giving him his features. However, I wanted to experiment more with the background but I found this to be a good start. Further improvement could include making the hues more yellow to fit his description given as well as complete his bust to make the piece look more complete. For Polixenes, I wanted to keep him rather young looking compared to Leontes as his description seemed rather angelic and angels are typically portrayed as young.

Taking inspiration from the head POV's and crown sketches, I created King Leontes with the help of the "Male head reference tool" by tracing over the main shapes of the face looking down then adding long droopy hair and his crown. I wanted to give him longer hair because I thought it would suit his description whilst also being a representation of the betrayal and sadness caused by the "loss" of his family. His crown is also mainly made of hard shapes like rectangles, diamonds to further reflect his personality. However there are two circles in the centre of his crown that could represent either his wife and son that bought him happiness or the happy ending that everyone got. I wasn't too sure about this idea but I kept it in mind.

After creating the two kings, I used their outlines so that experimenting with different media would be easier. (By rubbing graphite on the back of the printed line art, I could then trace over the lines then transfer them onto paper. This is how I wanted the two kings to look in the final outcome, though they would need to be resized.

This is the last experiment I made with watercolour and added detail with coloured pencil. This was definitely my favourite medium as it was easy to work with and the colours are vivid. Because I used watercolour paper to paint on, the texture comes through which I really liked. During the process, I wondered what orange would look like instead of yellow as it was part of the colour palette I considered; I thought the yellow paired better with blue. I also gave him facial hair and spikes on his armour as I thought it would make him appear slightly older and more "dangerous". After this experimentation, I learnt some extra details that I wanted to give Leontes in my final outcome (facial hair and more sharper features to his character)

Experimenting with Media

To paint Leontes, I used acrylic paint with different hues of Blue. With each King, I wanted to put their colours accents into eachothers character to represent their similarities which is why his eyes and main gem in his crown are yellow. I think that was an improvement from the last as the yellow doesn't overpower the blues In the painting. However, the blues didnt look as vibrant as I had hoped and it was difficult for me to layer the colours. I also had trouble mixing the colours to my liking but I still like how it came out. I believe i conveyed him quite well but the colours need to be more saturated.

The first experimentation I did with a different medium was oil pastels. Because either only had a limited colour palette to use for this test, I made his skin yellow and made the stronger shadows (like under his chin and neck) red. I also made his hair blue as a way to share his similarity with Leontes, but I think the blue comes off way too strong. Going forward I wanted to make each others colours more subtle in each other rather than it be too much. I liked how I could make bold and vibrant linen sin the work but I didn't like the lack of control so I decided not house this medium

After my initial ideas, i settled on the playing card idea. I took what i like from the previous initial sketches like the clear distinction between light and dark as well as the backgrounds they each have. I also took inspiration from the two mood-boards i had made previously to create a rough idea of the composition. Though, i didnt like their backgrounds too much and i thought there could be a more interesting way of displaying each character through different perspectives.

My class went to see a production in the Royal Opera House called "blank". I thought it was amazing and enjoyed watching the actors perform despite me not being a big fan of theatre. I also loved the building inside out, I thought the details inside were beautiful; especially the lighting. The Orchestra was also incredible.
