After world war I, the united states became a consumer society and was blinded by their wealth. People lived extravagant lives and used the money to cover unhappiness. As a result, many people were searching for new ideas and values. A new generation of authors, known as the Lost Generation, arose; authors such as Ezra Pound were among this generation that introduced many changes both socially and politically. Ezra Pound is well known for his lengthy sentences. His most notable work Ulysses was originally published in December of 1920, and is noticed so much because of the way Joyce wrote it. According to Britannica, Ulysses was so popular because of "its use of a variant of the interior monologue known as the stream-of-consicousness technique" (Britannica). Because Joyce published his work between the years 1914-1939, he falls into the Modernist category. This is where Modernism arose and the presence of T.S Eliot was known. T.S Eliot was one of the many writers and artists who called themselves Modernists. He was an American-English poet, playwright, and literary critic. He was a leading figure in the Modernist movement in Poetry in many of his various works. Those various works being The Waste Land (1922) and Four Quartets (1943). Many people thought his poetry was confusing and complex. But because of this, Eliot had said that the poetry had to be struchted like this in order to express Modernism. Experimentation: breaking free from old techniques and norms of literature - writing in free verse
Absurdity: inspired by world wars and goes off the belief that the world is irrational and meaningless
Symbolism: meant much more than one thing meaning or symbolizing something else. It wasn't a new concept, but was used to allow more room for audiences to use their imagination.

Hughes wrote in many literary genres including poetry, novels, plays, and short stories. He publish his first poem in 1921, and his first book in 1930, titled "Not without laughter". Hughes didn't differentiate between his personal experience and the common experience of black America in his works because he wanted to reflect the culture of his people in his writing.
